Did you ride today?

We're going to a wedding this weekend in Vancouver, about 5 hours drive. Hopefully plan to take a bike along to get out for a ride before the wedding.
No rides for me since the weekend. Working two jobs keeps me busy - looking forward to one of them coming to an end in a month or so, in time for summer riding season.

Just a quick six miles to check some derailer adjustments after chain clean/lube before dark, getting ready for some longer rides this weekend.
"Just". Heh. A few months ago that same six mile route left me exhausted rather than energized and I usually had to stop at least once to catch my breath. Now it's just a warm up. A little progress.

Rode the Masi to work today, the usual 32 mile round trip. Great fun. Cool, dry air, headwinds both ways of course.

First Day of Spring - Weather
I think we might have hit 70° tonight, but I can't confirm that. So I took my faithful `71 Raleigh DL-1 out for some exercise. Rode the MRT down to Mendota and back. The trail was crowded tonight, lots of pasty white skin showing. Here are a couple shots I took during the ride:
It felt so good to finally get out in shorts and a T-shirt.

Shorts and a t-shirt?
If I had that bike I'd wear nothing less than tweed. Or linen. And a pith helmet.

Unfortunately, after building this and the French Bike, I don't have the budget for tweed or linen at retail prices. Maybe I'll hit the local Goodwill shops before the Lake Pepin Tour...

Actually from yesterday. Haven't wrapped the handlebars as I am trying to decide if I can live with bars this wide.

Two rides this morning. First was a 29 mile training ride for my friend Steve. We did one lap of the HCSO Fallen Heroes route for 29 miles. This ride has some nice rollers for this area of Florida and Steve needs to get as much of that kind of riding as he can before the actual ride next month. That ride is 50 miles through the same terrain. Since I'm shooting for a 1,000 mile month, 29 miles wasn't going to help me make it so on the way home, I stopped at the park where I do most of my rides and did a 24 mile, windy loop. Today's total is 53 miles.

Headed out from the house this morning on one of my PUM or P rides. These are lone riding, no touching the ground except for Picking Up Money or Peeing. Not meant to be fast paced rather a decent distance ride and hopefully profitable. Did the 5 mile warm up to the Pioneer Trail Head with the first PUM stop for a pennie and a pee at the Trail Head then off for an additional 67 miles and a second PUM stop for a dime. Had 3 gels while riding allowing a comfortable 17.7mph moving average by the time I pulled back into my garage.

It got up into the low 50s F here today, so I took the Trek 400 out. Probably around 10-15 miles total, but it was windy as heck, so felt like more. It's supposed to be in the 60s through the weekend, and hopefully less windy, too.

Twelve miles on a somewhat hilly route to stretch my legs. Cool evening, little wind, very pleasant. Might try for a 40-50 mile ride this weekend. So far my longest single session rides have been 30 miles. Might need to adjust my bar height along the way -- experiencing some joint pains in the wrists and thumbs, and a bit too much pressure with the bar lowered to seat height.
You gonna eat that?
Over the last six days I rode 200 miles. Tonight, the 7th day, was a day of rest.
Friday I did a "group" ride that turned out to be just me and one other rider. I got 37 miles on my trusty 2-speed
Saturday was my longest ride of the week; I rode my age (54 miles) on a breakfast ride plus bonus miles.
Sunday was a group ride; got 30 miles in.
Monday I did only 15 miles.
Tuesday I rode 24 miles.
Last night I did 40 on a group ride which included several Personal Records on Strava segments. I hung near the front of the pack for most of the ride and seemed better able to hang in front as the ride went on.

I think it's time for a little cross-posting. Not too long ago, I was watching the live feed here, and somebody came up on the Hybrid thread with this:

To which I replied:
That is the hunch-backed, speed monkey position, and I hear it is very addicting for those who can stand it. But it has unpleasant side effects, such as a powerful obsession with weight, speed and distance numbers, which reduce every ride to a painful exercise in incremental improvement. This, if left unchecked, can lead to an expensive carbon fiber habit, which then often results in bankruptcy and divorce. In the final stages, we find the poor ex-speed monkey homeless, on the street, riding a department store 10-speed with the drops flipped-upward, telling delirious tales filled with improbable numbers, and muttering about that damned Campagnolo. Beware!
Just sayin'...

As I do most days, I've been riding my hunch-back, speed-monkey, non-carbon, definitely-vintage road bikes to work this week, the Gazelle, the Masi, then the Motobecane yesterday and the Grandis today. So far I'm bankrupt only in the leg department, but then, I'm usually bankrupt in the leg department.

Here's one from my ride after work last night:
Had a nice little picnic on the park bench there, and rode alongside the river until it was time to go home. It always amazes me how quickly we transition from winter to Spring here. One day the skies are cloudy, wind is blowing 30mph, and the temperature is 38°F; and the next day it's 74° and sunny like it was last night.
Sorry to hear about your legs... hope you get well soon.

Ya know, I'm just jealous because I can't ride with drops anymore, (back problems) - and my right knee is held together by four screws (at least those are titanium!), so I can't ride as hard as I would sometimes like. So I've learned to appreciate the joys of slow. That's why all my bikes have rearview mirrors - so I can see you guys coming up "On yer left!". Cheers!

You have posted some very nice pics lately. Quite relaxing. I sometimes wish my commute was like that. I could use that park bench... (My commute has a few but not with a nice view of a bridge like that.)
