I am confident the thing is accurate. My fasting glucose tends to run 105-113, which USED to be considered normal but now is considered pre-diabetes/impaired fasting glucose. My A1C of 6.0% is consistent with these.
For now I am going to try to cut back on my evening carbs and monitor labs annually. My dad has Type 2 Diabetes and I have clearly inherited the tendency. It's possible my pancreas will crap out in the future and I will have to take some stupid medicine (metformin) for sugar. Sad.

So here is the medical lesson for the day.
The HbA1C is the percentage of your red cells' hemoglobin that have a glucose (sugar) molecule covalently bonded to it.
Thus, it is expressed as a percentage. Typical "normal" numbers are from the upper 4's to upper 5's. If you have diabetes you generally want 7% or less. Although it's a percentage, I have never seen a number higher than 18% and even 9 or 10% is quite high/bad.
The benefit of this test is that the more traditional glucose/sugar number is quite variable, this one reflects the average sugar level for the previous 3-4 months.
Unless you have diabetes or borderline sugar numbers, you don't really need to get this test.

I don't know if I asked this before, but my new strips are running 10 pts. higher than my expired ones. I asked the pharmacist if that's because the old ones were expired (recently) and she said that she didn't know.

Weirdly related, but an area that the group ride passes through has recently had hand-written signs taped to telephone polls. Instead of "cash for houses," (which I've always thought was odd - why would I want to call a craft paper and magic marker-wielding stranger about buying my house?) they've been "cash for diabetes strips."
Sugar test strips are not cheap. Last I checked, they were roughly $1 each. The machines are practically free. The analogy I use is Printer : Ink :: Glucometer : test strips.
Some people get more strips than they need (and insurance covers it), and other people desperately need strips (crappy or no insurance), so there is a market for unused strips. It gets complicated, and the printer analogy works, because there are many different brands of meters and each uses its own proprietary strip. Even the same company may make multiple models of meters with different strips for each model.

I know most people have a love/hate relationship with their Garmin, but I am generally satisfied with my 130. I don’t do a whole lot with it but for navigating a downloaded course it has been reliable for me.

I have a couple Garmin hand held gps units from the 90s. They prolly still work.
And a cassette Walkman which works well. I, however, no longer have any cassette tapes. I believe we still have our mini-disc player too.
