The sky is getting pretty orangey-gray in Sacramento. I can smell it even inside our sealed HVAC building.

Almost the entire month of June we had a screaming SW wind 24/7. Now that the state has once again started to burn to the ground, we get day after day of northerly winds that blow that crap all the way down here. Looking at Diablo, it's shrouded in smoke about halfway up. Haven't tried riding with a N95 mask on...wonder if I could do it?!

If you are up there today please be careful. It will be a Zoo up there. Today July 4th 4 years ago, I was descending taking it really slowly I came around a corner and was hit by a car in my lane on a blind corner! I went from the best shape in my life to Roadkill!!! Life-flighted the works. I still ride the Mt just not on the 4th

This site may be useful reference for those looking to ride through fire season while limiting their pollutant exposure. Very high-resolution air quality data in some areas (I run one of these monitors in my backyard) and better than what most of the regional air quality districts can currently provide.

I rode my bike wearing a mask on Friday because the AQI was in the unhealthy category. This may become a regular thing every summer until all the forests burn up...

They are predicting containment of the Carr fire in September. That fire is bigger in area than Los Angeles. Unless we get very lucky, it is going to be worse in three weeks, and will keep getting worse as we have yet to enter peak fire season.

Where I live (Santa Cruz), we have had a few smokey days, but for the most part the air quality has been quite reasonable.

We are so flippin' lucky; fires to the north of us, fires to the east, fires to the south, and we get a tinge of brown over the hills. So far.

Really lucky the Bay Area microclimates have been in full effect this summer. The worst thing that could happen would be a raging fire on the peninsula or other western location where smoke would blow right over the entire area day after day. Unfortunately, it looks like the increasing number of fires way up north is the culprit for all the somewhat poor air quality the past few days, and it's probably going to be like this for a while. There's a lot of fires burning up north, and since they are close to the coast, the prevailing winds are capturing some of the smoke, which brings it down south and then across the area. It's basically a counter clockwise flow that's pumping smoke down on top of us. It's probably not going to be really clear around here for a while, unless we get a particular day with a wind shift. But the prevailing pattern will keep us rather hazy for quite a while I suspect.

Notice the AQI is basically moderately poor across the entire Bay Area now, no relief in SF or closer to the coast.

Saw a lot of people riding today, Air Quality went to Good on the Penninsula according to EPA AirNow...but I could still see the smog.

Was garbage Saturday afternoon and most of the day Sunday. Pretty bad most of today but it's clearing up. Supposed to get better the next few days, let's hope. I'm getting sick and tired of this Beijing-like air here, especially considering there are no fires that close.

Air quality here in and around Oakland today was the worst I've seen it in a while. Air quality index had it in the "unhealthy" range at 159! That doesn't bode well for my weekend riding plans.

Did a short recovery ride today, and when I got home I felt like I had run a marathon. Also felt like I was sick or had a chest cold. My lungs still feel scratchy and painful when I breathe deep. Not going to ride this weekend if it's like this. I could barely make out Diablo from Danville Blvd.
