The Hole in the Ground -- 6/10

Promising start, akin to Turn of the Screw, The Other and similar explorations of Capgras Syndrome. Quickly devolves into tropes, cliches and improbable and unnecessary depictions of violence that undermine the psychological tension.

Best thing about it is Seana Kerslake, who makes the movie worth watching. She manages to rise about the hackneyed story. And the cinematography is good.

High Life (2018) -- 7/10

This movie recommendation appeared on a top ten list of recent or obscure scifi, so I watched it without knowing anything about it other than that it featured Robert Pattinson (I knew of him but had never watched a Twilight movie).

My immediate impression was that it's a less compelling variation of Solaris. Only after watching the movie did I read some reviews, most of which said exactly the same thing. Stylish, detached, even sterile. And slow. If you enjoyed Solaris (I did) or Under the Skin (loved it) you might find High Life worth watching. But while I enjoy re-watching Solaris and Under the Skin, I don't feel any need to watch High Life again. The story really goes nowhere and takes its sweet time getting there. If it's a metaphor the intent is too obscure to appreciate.

echo in the canyon musical documentary on the laurel canyon folk-rock scene in the 1965-1967 era.
jakob dylan may have been the perfect choice (given his lineage, accomplishments and appreciation) to pilot the project.
some intense, nostalgic interface especially with the mamas & papas segment (wth?!). a 9. movie could easily been
45 mins-1 hr longer. done right? coulda been a contender/10

and...once upon a time in the west (1968) for giggles. i've rated this movie from 8.5-9.5 over the years..depending on my mood.
pretty damn solid. i'd rate it a 9 but with claudia cardinale in her best role..? I'll bump it up that half point to a 9.5.

The Shawshank Redemption, (9.5/10) Still amazing after all these viewings (and wayyyy better than the novella). If I had to be picky, I did notice a few more "liberties" with the story to arrive at the conclusion but everything's just so satisfying you don't care.

Knives Out, 8.5/10. Excellent cast, excellent plot, a great take on the classic Christie tropes. (A heck of a lot better than Branagh's mess of the Orient Express last year)

The Irishman - 8/10. You might think Scorsese/De Niro/Pesci gangster movies was a stale formula, but somehow it's not.

Finally got to see Joyeux Noel. Movie about the WW I Christmas truce. Pretty good 7.5/10. It is free on Sony/Crackle if you withstand many commercials interruptions.

6 Underground

6/10

A Michael Bay production starring Ryan Reynolds in his typical sarcastic mode. This go-round however, he plays an eccentric billionaire who (along with 5 other experts he recruits and convinces to fake their deaths and join his team) is bent on ridding the world of evil. They become a part of his "no names" vigilante justice force to over-throw a ruthless dictator who uses poison gas on his own people.

6 Underground is a fast paced adrenaline pumping action movie with great location scenes, car chases and in the action camera shots. Unfortunately, this presentation comes replete with the requisite gun fire, bombs and explosions we've all come to know and expect from Michael Bay.

The movie might have been acceptable (the stunts, and those camera angles through the chase scenes) if it weren't for the unending flow of gratuitous violence, e.g. graphic, slow motion bullets effects through the brain, decapitations and impalement that allow for only one brief line of redemption -- spoken during a hospital visit -- throughout the entire movie.

This is a movie with so many blockbuster names that you can't help but think it's going to be good. The lasting impression for me is that in spite of all the effort it continually proves that it should have been shot 20 years ago or that casting should have considered using other actors for the "younger person" scenes. Additionally, it's always a good idea when doing casting for specific factual persons that you consider having them at least fare some mild resemblance to the individual for whom which they are playing. Hoffa's casting was comical as was Kennedys. You are continually reminded as you watch the movie that the actors involved are FAR to old to be cast in parts like they were required to play during at least parts of the movie.
It was boring, overlong, and far too full of itself to be enjoyable. Total waste of 4 hours which you will never get back. 2/10. Watch SpongeBob instead.

Awful, tried to watch but couldn't finish. All style and no substance, typical Micheal Bay. Its basically a load of set pieces loosely stitched together to make a messy and uninteresting story.

The Biggest Little Farm 8/10. An enjoyable if somewhat unrelatable movie. A couple decides they want to take up farming and do so not a little bit at a time (i.e.; starting slow and gradually scaling up as they become more experienced and knowledgeable). No they are all in from the get go - soil reclamation, orchards, livestock, etc. None the less it was fun to see the land be transformed and the cinematography was excellent.

Spoiler alert: the bit at the end where they say that the dog died just about broke my kids. But yeah, the cinematography was excellent.

I watched The Christmas Chronicles. It is a Netflix movie with Kurt Russel playing a crusty Santa. Sleigh crashes and some plucky, yet troubled, brother and sister help save Christmas. As you might expect, it is a little sappy. Maybe a step below The Santa Clause movie. Good CGI though. 6/10.
