Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

People do say C'Dale. And Spesh, and a million other abbreviations in and out of cycling. I'm one of the bigger sticklers for language that you'll meet, but this is an odd hill to die on.

I do respect the sentiment.

Even Campagnolo accepts Campy.
But don't say grouppo, please!

I'm not losing sleep over it, but some people here seem a little bothered by being corrected..

Not only do Campy accept Campy, but I've even seen em print it. On parts, IIRC!

It is a cowards way to not pronounce Campagnolo. Probably native English speakers who cannot pronounce foreign languages if their life depended on it.

I'm totally able to pronounce Cahmpanyolo, but it's too many syllables for an Aussie to bother with.

You complain about this (and brifter, and Ui2) far too much to get away with both calling the others d-bags and claiming it's no big deal to you.

Abbreviations also aren't really "incorrect" so it's more "people being bothered by told their acceptable use of language is incorrect". Much like I'd be bothered if someone told me I had to put on a shirt and tie to go grocery shopping.

I don't complain about people using brifter or Ui2, but they do make the user sound like a tool.

I’ve always said Campag. It’s the accepted nomenclature in the UK and Ireland. In early 90’s, pre-Celtic Tiger Dublin, talking about Campag was always purely aspirational. I knew one lad who had delta brakes. I was very jealous of him. It seemed as unattainable and beyond afffordability as a $265 corkscrew. Calling it “Campag” made it sound exotic.

“Campy” sounds like a mascot, like a bear in a Cub Scout uniform used to sell bike parts to kids.

Does a Campag Grouppo require the MyCampy app to change settings ?

Campy, not Campag, the official nickname.

Hey, I reckon folks who say stuff like "would of" sound like morons, but you can bet your bottom dollar that one day it'll be considered legit. Like how you guys messed up "couldn't care less", unlike the rest of the world.

Things fall apart, the centre can't hold. Resign yourself to entropy, man

Yeah.. the tie isn't necessary, but grocery shopping shirtless is a bit odd.

Oh hey, this bugged me... Anyone sufficiently fluent in English is all over foreign pronunciation, thanks to the fact that English is a total *****, having soaked up terms from all over, particularly Europe.
