I've been lurking here for awhile and I haven't seen any threads on the subject. So, I'd like to know where you all work and what your job entails. I got thinking about it since anyone that I talk to believes that if you commute by bike, you don't have an education. I'll start it off...

I work for a private university as a stage manager doing staging and performance lighting.

I guess I would fall into the stereotype. I have a G.E.D. and I work as a third shift janitor in a plastic cutlery factory.

Funny you should say that, I had a G.E.D. and worked as a third shift janitor in a distribution warehouse. That was many years ago. Now I have a doctorate, own four professional offices about 30 miles from each other. I bike commute to the one closest to my home, but nice weather only; I am a fair weather rider for sure.

LoL I'm lower than you GED types.. when I went to break out of highschool the rules were silly so I had to take the California state proficiency test. I actually went to college and got an MCSE AA degree.. tried corporate life for a bit and am now a farmer

As long as we're comparing education, I have bachelor's degrees in Music Performance and Computer Science. I'm a software developer for a regional bank doing mostly web work using ASP.NET. My first job out of college was a software developer for a laboratory testing company doing mostly desktop apps using VB6 and then .NET. For all the bad press Microsoft gets, they really have a top-notch development ecosystem. I also play trombone in a few local groups, some volunteer, some paid.

I'm the environmental supervisor at a medium sized dredging/engineering/coastal construction company. I handle all the environmental permitting and design projects to avoid impacts to the environmentally sensitive coastal areas of Florida. 32 years old, BS in Environmental Science.

I am an engineer in product development for a company that makes personnel protective clothing for the health care sector. I commute 65 miles (55 of it by commuter rail) from North San Diego County to Orange county's Medical/Technological Business district. My position now includes frequent trips (about once a month, though three times this month) to our manufacturing facility in Tijuana, though I haven't gotten up the nerve to bike there yet.

Pay particular attention to the road surface. This one is in good condition. (relatively)

I work for a company that sells bicycle racks for cars. Our racks used to be made here in Calfornia but now are all made in Taiwan. Here's the addres of our website: www.hollywoodracks.com

I'm the only one here who rides to work (16 mi. round trip). I do lots of different jobs here: sales presentations for our distributors sales reps, getting orders ready for our factory in Taiwan, working the bike shows, invoicing, product development, etc.

I work at a large aerospace foundry as the cost accountant. I commute 31 miles each way - in a car... Figured I would share some relevant stuff after dropping the racks comment.

I'm a regulatory and compliance officer for a regional office of a large medical and pharmacuetical distribution company. So, basically, I argue with people for a living and in some cases, protect them from their own stupidity.

I don't have a college degree, but I do have alot of experience in the medical regulatory field, experience sometimes still means something in the world. Most people view my biking as an ecentric habit, since I'm clearly employable, have notable job skills, and I am highly sought after, yet I ride a bike.

Years ago, I worked for Kryptonite before they were bought. As a dedicated bicycle commuter, I thought it would be awesome, "bike nirvana". It sucked, one of the most toxic work environments I've ever experienced.

I was the only person there that actually rode a bike with any regularity, nevermind to work. And, my immediate co-workers were all miserable, middle aged women, whose knowledge of bicycles basically began and ended with they have two wheels. And none of the departments socialized with each other, unless they were a manager or above.

but guidance councelor told my mom I tested too high and I should concentrate on getting into
a good college. Graduated and went right to work. 32 years later and I still haven't said " what if?"

For data collection: Of the 8 faculty (tenured profs) in the Division/Department:

I commute (20km RT) by bike most days
Another (20km RT) by bike
Another (18km RT) by running or bike
Another (18km RT) by bike (50%) of the time
Another cycles and runs extensively but commutes by free bus
Another kayaks/windsurfs into work (lives and works on the same river as do most of us)
Another takes the free bus
Final one drives (and man do we give him crap )

I work as an undergrad lab assistant in an optics lab at UW-Milwaukee. How I ended up as a mechanical engineer in an optics lab I have no idea. I think they sold me with the words "laser" and "electromagnet" in the same sentence . Before that, I was (among several vocations) also a third shift janitor with GED (well, an HSED) at a Menards store in Plover, WI.

It's quite interesting as he clearly states it from day 1. We usually make him walk somewhere and force him to talk at the same time so he gets out of breath Usually when going up the stairs or up a hill.

Production Manager for a small publishing company located in the Boston North Shore area.

I took this position after working mechanics/sales at a bike shop for 4.5 years. I'd rather be wrenching bikes...

BA in English from a state U, minors in Business Admin. and Studio Art, Woodworking. Continuing ed in CAD, welding, bike mechanics.

My commute to the shop was 38 mi r/t, which I did regularly 2-4x/week. Now, it's 45mi one way to work, so if I ride, I do a bike-bus-bike commute which results in a 16mi r/t commute. Once it warms up a bit, I will make it a lot more regular...except life changes dictate a move in the near future, which will probably put me back into bike-only commute range.
