Again, thank you all for your help, patience and persistence. After trying the whole thing again and comparing to my other bikes I found what some of your were saying to be true. The mech was not working correctly. It seemed to be working normal the other day after setting limit screws and aligning so I didn't look any deeper than that. I noticed that the range of motion was not quite what is on my other bikes. So I sprayed the whole thing with a cleaner and worked it a bit until it sprung to life. Fit the chain on using big big plus 2 and it works just fine.

Thank you again for talking me through this thing. Tomorrow will be raining but I will ride happily through the alps on the rollers in the basement.
