The position is the same as for snot rocketry - head turned to one side and down, that hand on the bridge of the nose, elbow held high and out of the way. Helps if that leg is at BDC.

Enough to get a good honk. The vibrations help loosen the load for ejection.

Inhale through the nose and open your mouth just a tiny bit enough to exhale.

Many years ago I was riding my mountain bike. I was gassed and breathing heavily through my mouth. My throat was bone dry. A horsefly flew into my mouth and stuck to the back of my throat. I thought I never would get it washed down. The only time in my life I ever coughed and gagged as violently was when I got hit with pepper spray.

Correct technique ^^^. That said, it's a skill that takes practice.

Nonsense. There is no way that you can get enough ventilation through your nose alone when exercising intensely. You absolutely have to breathe through your mouth.

Depends on what "intensely" means. You wrote that it can only be done when riding easily, which I don't equate to climbing for minutes at VO2max before I need to exhale out my mouth. I don't need to inhale until I'm going way into the red and there's actual science behind why nose breathing is more efficient than mouth breathing.

If you're terribly concerned about bugs, try the Thomas Voeckler (sp?) smile. Lips open, teeth clenched, you can get more air in but the teeth catch the bugs (so you can chew them before swallowing, I presume).

Funny you should post this. I try not to make it a habit, but when I'm really working it, yes. And it does worry me. Like you, I have had bugs hit my face a few times, twice today. I don't want to be eating bugs anyway, but I really don't know what would happen if a bug hit the back of my throat at full speed. Things could get "interesting".

Generally speaking my mouth is closed. Where I live, (North Carolina) we have a lot of various sizes of bugs in the summer, including various bees. If I have to breath with my mouth open I have my head tilted down a little so as to minimize force-eating bugs.

Probably cleaner too, unless the exercise bike's chain was waxed. How many bike outfits do you figure it'll hold, if you keep the walker that long?

Seriously, keep up the rehab/walking; hope you can get back on the bike soon (end of summer?)!

A CT scan more than a decade ago revealed my lungs are significantly scarred, most likely from a childhood sharing an indoor space with people who liked putting dozens of burning things in their mouths every day. I have no idea how I survived Cat 4, other than I seem to recall a lot of Primatene was involved.

Any sort of physical activity makes me a mouth-breather. Uncouth, but effective.
