Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

For me, no one gets to test ride a new bike of mine until I have put some decent miles (i.e. break in period) on it. Even then, if they aren't back in 15 mins., I'm a bit nervous.

Stare at it for a couple of hours, take pictures, then I'll go online look for new Frame, Wheelset, Pedals, Cranks, Stem, Saddle, different color bar tape...etc. :-)

I get it ready to ride. And I take all those stupid warning stickers off.

Ride it through a mud puddle, then let it fall over.

I like to get those out of the way early on.

I always prepare my-selves to get kicked out of the house and makes promises to sell at least one.

Then I remind her that it's because of all the biking she can dress up with this jewel of a husband

Ride the F'ing thing until you puke, then worry about if the vomit color on the bar tape matches the decals or not.

stick it in the garage and carry on with life (like browsing ). Then use it for the intended purpose and make adjustments over the next several weeks.

Brought it home today. First ride was from the LBS to home in mixed freezing rain/sleet/snow.

Then I had to explain to the old Schwinn why it wasn't needed anymore. Tough conversation.

String it up like a fish and weight it, start fiddling with all the fun bits (seat, bars, stem), install pedals, computer. Photograph the heck out of it, then ride ride ride.

Remove dork disc (if applicable), all stickers, logos and reflectors.
Install my seat and pedals
Flip stem
Black bar tape

Try to sell at least 1 bike and hope for marital bliss (crosses fingers)

And put one of these on the bottom of the downtube

Speaking of labels and reflectors. Are these required by some federal law to be installed by the dealer on new bicycles? The family bikes I could understand but kinda silly on performance bikes. Perhaps so they can protect themselves from liability once the customer rolls it out the door and removes them once they get home.
