A friend told me he rides at 60 mph when going downhill. Is he crazy ?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Not being a road biker myself, I don't know if that is normal, but on public roads, that sounds way too reckless. Crazy or not ?

I think I hit 88 once with my flux capacitor turned on. Unfortunately my powermeter only said 1.20 Gigawatts.

both would be crazy. actually, i would be surprised if he is really going that fast, but it is possible. Just foolish. and i've been over 100 on a motorcycle, and yes, that was pretty damn foolish (it was also 20 years ago too)

I've never hit 60, but I've regularly gone over 50, it's not that big of a deal.

Well.....at the very least motorcyclists wear baggier and leathery clothing, but a bicyclist.......he would get the life scrapped out of his body if he fell at that speed

I've gone 60.5mph max. I go 51/52 frequently, but have not had a long and steep enough hill to do 60 on.

A modern 1000cc sportbike will do 180+. I hit 120+ regularly on streets of willow (very small track) although when Im on the track I cover the speedo with tape so I cant see lol

Im also in a full face helmet, full leathers, boots, and back/spine protector. The (relatively slow) speeds I ride my bicycle at with no gear on are insane. Those that go faster than me on a bicycle with no gear on are even more insane.

I'll add that last week I was going over 50 and a [larger] friend flew by me like I was standing still. He has told me he has gone well over 60. Sounds abound right, I couldn't even get on his wheel.

It is on the water. Ever seen 100 in a boat? Pretty big pucker factor.

About mile of reasonably straight -12% ought to about do it. Never quite made 60mph myself. but 50+ is pretty common. Not anywhere near the most reckless this a roadie can do.

I've done 54 and felt perfectly safe doing it. There have been other times when it's gusty and going 35 feels really scary.

Could it be someone that I ride with? Every rider that I outdescend on mtn roads seems to hit 60 while I top out at 42!

My point was that as horrific as that was, he has no permenant injury and is in fact back to racing. Generally injuries aren't any worse as a result of speed unless you hit something. If you just go down you slide. I broke my collarbone a year ago when I was only going about 20.

have had the gixxer 600 up to 135, but I tend to keep it fairly reasonable.
