When you bring home a new bike..

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When you bring home a new bike..

..what do you do to it besides ride lots? I'm bringing home my new baby later this week (09 CAAD9 6) and am always fascinated to see what everyone does when they get a new bike. Change the bartape? Flip the stem? What does everyone here do when they bring home their new bike? I didn't see any previous threads on the same subject although I'm sure there are, I probably just didn't use the right search terms.

Ride it and see what needs to be adjusted. Who cares what everyone else does?

I wait for the wife to ask, "is that a new bike?" And you proceed to lie saying you just added something to the old one. It helps to have a garage full of junk that she doesn't like to go into.

I built my last bike from a bare frame so changing parts out wasn't an issue. I would suggest placing it side by side with a bike you currently ride, and adjust it so the fit is similar to start with. Then make minor adjustments as you may need, and then ride like a mad man, and enjoy it.

Well I won't be setting it up like the current one since it's an 83 Peloton that's way too big for me. Figure I'll get it all set up at the LBS when I pick it up, hopefully ride it home if it's favorable outside and take off all the reflectors.

My brother's a minister....I'll get the holy water from him.....

If it's a used bike, this is usually my routine:

-Clean it briskly with some degreaser and a wet rag
-Lube it
-Adjust derailleurs
-Ride
-Assess other needs
-Work on said needs
-Ride more

fin.

I think I'm gonna clean the frame down real good too and put some car wax on it to protect it a bit. Glad I don't have to mess with this wife bs like the rest of you yet.

...and we'll pretend there's not plenty that you're missing out on by not having one.

Lean it against the bed and sleep beside it through the night. I must stare at it and caress it for a 12 hour period before it allows me to ride it.

I stare at it, because I usually buy a new bike when it's snowing out.

"Bring home a new bike"???
Eeewwww....you mean...a...store-bought bike???
My new bikes arrive in many separate packages from USPS/UPS/FedEx over a period of weeks.

I have never "brought a new bike home" .....

Once in a while a courier drops off a box.

The box contains a frame that was made for me.

I will have gathered together all of the parts I want for the bike by the time the frame arrives.

I retreat to the basement and put parts on frame.

End result = bike.

There are some (Freds?) that will buy cycling kits to match their new bike.
