2007 Dura Ace 9 speed chain and ring selection

I picked up a 2007 Jamis Xenith Team. It has 9 sped Dura Ace. It needs new chain and rings. I would like to replace these with something of good value and not spend the rest of my years budget on them.

I know there are a lot of choices for chain out there. What can be fitted for chain rings though? Can I use Tiagra or other Shimano rings? is there an aftermarket manufacture that I can use? I would like to have something decent but not break the bank. My other bike is 2006 105 and shifts more than fine for me.

I appreciate any head start in searching you guys can give me.

Thanks in advance!

Why do you think it needs new chain rings? Are they obviously worn into a shark fin shape?
Anything with the correct BCD is going to work fine. Some may just not look good or the spider to tab width may not match up.

I've found that the matching width KMC chain works well with Ultegra and Dura Ace components.

Your crank uses standard 5-bolt 130 mm BCD rings so any similarly configured chainrings will work. Tiagra, 105 or Ultegra would be fine as long as they have the correct bolt pattern. There are aftermarket chainrings that will fit but the Shimano rings tend to shift better. AFAIK, Shimano didn't offer a "compact" (110 mm BCD) Dura Ace in this series so everything was 130 mm.

Note, the newest, most current Shimano cranks use 4-bolt, asymetrical chainrings so you cannot use them.

+1 on KMC chains.

eBay is full of 130 mm chain rings; I recently picked up a pair of new 9-speed Ultegras for less than $20 for both...

Outside of buying Shimano replacement rings, Vuelta makes good chainrings and won't break the bank.

+1 on KMC chains.

Thanks for the responses guys. Knowing that bolt circle number will certainly get me started. Isn't there a width also for it to be 9 speed?

"matching width KMC chain" does that mean it will be 9 speed or is there another dimension I also need to look for?

Have not rode it more than around the block yet but no skipping or poor shift. It just looks like the chain does not fall into the teeth correctly on the backside of the ring. I will also measure the chain.

Yes, a clean is going to happen soon. Just got it last night. $650 I think that was good.

Got it for my wife. It is more than what she needs. Needs clean up and TLC. But I don't find any major damage.

When I get home, I will check the chain and rings closer.

Chainrings do come in "widths" but it's a matter of having the correct gap between the rings rather than the width of the teeth themselves. Chainrings listed as 7/8-speed will have a gap between them wider than 9 or10-speed and the narrower 9-speed chain can (but usually doesn't) hang up and skate over the smaller ring's teeth rather than seating immediately.

Yes, buy a chain listed as 9-speed. That's all you have to be concerned about.

One more thing to consider, if the cassette and chain have a lot of miles, a new chain can, and likely will, skip on the smaller, most worn cogs. You may need to replace the cassette also.

CharlieC, Looking at the photos in post 12, it looks like the chain is stretched. I would replace the chain, chain rings, and the cassette. The reason being that the Ti chain rings wear fairly quickly as do the larger three or four Ti cogs on the cassette. A very good cassette is the Shimano 14-25 HG50 and Shimano 105 or Ultegra for the chain rings.

The chain was defiantly stretched. I grabbed a $12 KMC X9.93 for Amazon. Threw that on for now. It's working without skipping or anything. I am not worried about it getting ruined from the worn gears since it was 12 bucks.

The cassette does not really look worn, it may have been replaced at some point. Either way, for my use, it will stay unless it causes a problem.

The outer chain ring is really bad. I'm letting her ride it some and maybe will want to get smaller ring like a 50 instead of the 53? I don't know, it works for now and we'll see what happens.

To be continued later....

Thanks for the advice everyone.
