1974 Motobecane Grand Record 23"
Hi all,
I am asking for a friend, who purchased this bike new in 1974 but now is looking to sell. I have not found any comps on cragslist or ebay, so am not sure what it's worth. I believe it is a 23", maybe 24" frame. It is a 1974 Motobecane Grand Record with Campy Nuovo Record groupset. Reynolds 531 frame with Nivex lugs.
I believe he had the wheels changed out for clinchers, instead of the original tubulars, and he says it has Campagnolo hubs. I imagine the cables and housing, brake pads, bar tape, hoods, and tires/tubes will need to be replaced to make this a rider again.
What is it worth? It's a beautiful bike, but I don't know enough about vintage road bikes to value it.

Grand Records have quite a following. The black and red has a lot of appeal. As is $300. With some new tires and a clean-up maybe as much as $450.

On local craigs, $200 as is.
But it may sit at that price. C&V demand has dropped significantly.

...nice bike, but as mentioned above, the Craigslist marketplace for this stuff has been very slow for the past year or three. Maybe it will pick back up ?
I had a similar Grand Jubilee, restored and in good running condition, all original components like this one that I advertised here several times last year on CL at $550.
So that's with all the stuff that needs replaced done, completely disassembled, cleaned, relubricated, wheels rebuilt, with the original Maillard hubs laced to brand new Sun M13ii, box section rims., good tires, new cables, needs nothing but a rider.
It sat until I finally pulled the ad. It's worth that much money to me to keep and ride it. Maybe $200 as a nice project bike for someone looking for a quality French bicycle from this time period, in this size. The paint and components look pretty good on yours. It would be an easy bicycle to restore and ride.

It’s worth what someone is willing to pay , which lately has been very low. A 1974 Motobecane Le Champion listed locally in central California just sold for $200 I never thought I’d see the day!

I'm riding one today still, bought on Easter Sunday in Chicago, 1972. Original hubs (Campy Nuovo Tipo according to forum litterati), Mavic rims & tubulars (not original!), gearset's Record DR & Stronglight up front. When I was looking to sell it earlier this spring I was seeing $100 - $150 for those I was finding. These things can be fun, or a headache if you need certain parts that just aren't available any more, at least not for a price that can be multiples of what one might pay for one.
Right now I'm looking to change the 24t rear Big for a 28t. It's hillier where I live now and ride around; where I lived until ten years ago it was flatland....
