Buying Preownd Dahon

Going to look at a couple preowned Dahon classic III. Seller is an older woman and knows virtually nothing about the bike. Her hubs and daughter rode them. Any tips on how I can tell the age / model, condition issues. She's asking $150.00 ea.
they appear to be in nice condition. I'm looking for a foldable to fit in my 13ft Scamp travel trailer. Used for leisurely riding when camping.
thanks!

well good luck.. I cant go with you to check it out

do you know how to inspect any bikes for wear and tear?

Early Dahons from the 80's were all steel, every part, rims and all

I am buying an old dahon classic iii as well. Picking it up this Sunday.

This is the seller’s description:

Had it tuned up early this summer with new brake pads and cables, plus gear cable as well. Sturmey Archer internal gear hub could use some TLC (or replacement, whichever you prefer,) but everything is all original. Also, the diagonal retainer bolt (which connects the frame with the steering column) is missing the original one; I just used a replacement bolt for the meantime.”

Does anyone know where to get the black knob that attaches the diagonal retainer, which connects the frame with the steering column? Someone on one of the threads claims he replaced. My attempts to inquire keeps getting deleted or isn’t being sent. I joined bikeforum just this evening to find out about this bike.

any advice anyone?

sorry if I sound rushed. I wrote a detailed question with images which may have gotten deleted for being a first time comment with images.

Here you have Dahon latch repair parts. It is serious as a bike opening up during the ride may lead to a serious injury. When you go to inspect the bike open up the page and try to identify with the seller what is missing. I would err on the side of caution especially when you lack experience. You may end up with a bike that you do not know how to fix and are afraid to ride. Best would be to identify a Dahon dealer nearby.

Thanks for the link. I had earlier found the thorusa site from googling dahon parts. But on that particular page, I have no idea whether or not the part or bolt is listed.

Would you happen to know the name of the bolt please holding the diagonal strut to the handlebars?

The seller says he is using another bolt but didn’t mention if the makeshift was any good as the original. I suppose I will have to see if it is steady.

Sorry, I have no idea - it just does not sound good. I am even separated at this moment from our own Dahons. Hinges and latches are pretty critical on a folder.

Maybe I will pass then: I just looked closely at the images and there is ducktape holding the gear control onto the handlebars.

I really want a 16” wheel bike and like steel.

Meanwhile there is a another 16” wheel:

“Giatex SPORT 550 Series 6-Speed 16" Stretching Bike” that someone is trying to sell for $550 on craigslist Toronto.

Which is kind of greedy. ( I offered him 350$ and he say he needs exactly his stated amt 🤨

The dahon classic iii is for $80. I won’t mind changing it into a single speed! (I.e. taking it to the bike repair to remove the sturmey archer completely)

Can someone please help with this knob bolt on the diagonal strut structure? Or any advice and encouragement?

$80 is not a lot of risk. If you are in Toronto area, there must be dealer there. I had a latch fixed by a Dahon dealer for a modest price and there was some problem there that I did not even notice. I originally went there to fix the headset.

There is no dealer, none that I could find. The person at Urbane Cycle was very urbane and professional. The guy at Curbside cycle was rude and provincial (perhaps because he sells 'brpmpton' and barked that he "never deals in Dahon". Then there was 'Jacob's bike' who said they could get me a 16" wheel Sturmey but will cost hundreds.

In any case, I'm glad I got over it. I still have my regular 20" Alton folder and still would like even smaller replacement.
