I realize this isn't the handcycle forum, but I haven't found an answer to my question yet. But I don't think my question only pertains to handcycles, so I'm hoping this group will give me some guidance.

I'm trying to figure out what the ebike feels like when the battery dies during a ride. Is it harder to ride than a regular bike because the ebike is usually heavier than a regular bike? Or is it harder to ride because there's extra friction in the system that the battery would compensate for?

FME, riding a relatively light mid-drive bike where I purposely rode without the motor on flat sections: obviously, the extra weight will increase the "resistance", but as long as the motor is geared, the extra energy required isn't obtrusive. Some individuals have stated their direct drive systems haven't required extra "power" when the battery is off, but mine does.

my bosch powered bike has some drag with its gearing. the new motors don't.plus it is 52 pounds about average for the higher end e bikes. weight is not too bad as long as your not trying go go fast or up really hard hills.

Really good point; if I have an electrical problem (has never happened, but almost ran out of juice once), walking the hill or whatever is an option that might not be available to a hand-cyclist. You would need to insure the gearing allowed you to get home whatever the hills involved. If I were physically challenged, my "ebike" would have two separate dedicated systems, so if one failed, I could still get home.

BTW, don't know what hand-cycle you're referring to, but I've seen them with BBS02's installed, and the conversion didn't seem that difficult. That could be "combined" with a front hub system for maximum "safety".
