Soma build 1x derailleur question and hello!

Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Soma build 1x derailleur question and hello!

Hi folks,

Super shiny new member here. I appreciate everyone’s efforts to make this such an informative place

So, I have a brand spanking new 2021 Soma Double Cross and complete 105 groupset with hydraulics waiting to be put together. I recently decided to go with a 1x set-up after stumbling on a GRX 1x 40t crankset for a song. Which leads to my questions... for chain tension duty has anybody run with a chain tensioner/guide with a 105 derailleur versus moving to Ultrega derailleur with clutch? I’m certainly able to purchase the Ultrega however if it really isn’t necessary I will set-up a guide/tensioner and call it a day.

For reference I don’t race and live in a pretty flat place. I do ride single track whenever I can and what I lack in skill, I make up for in stupidity I will stay with my current 11-32 cassette so I don’t need a long cage.

Thanx, in advance, for your input

While I havent done 1x without a clutch on gravel, Ive done it on MTB for multiple builds and it works fine.

Narrow-wide chainrings help retain the chain a lot. And besides that, just put something on the stay for chainslap and call it good.
3 MTBs in my house have 1x without clutch. One has an RD from the mid90s, another from the mid00s, and the last is a newer Microshift Advent RD.

My gravel bike has the Ultegra RX RD and I have enganged then disengaged the clutch multiple times while riding to try and see the difference. At this point, its just something I take on faith.

Congrats on the bike/frame! If you are running a properly set up 11-32 105, you don't really need a clutch or chain tensioner. I don't have any problems at all doing that with 2x.

Yeah, if you want a spread from 50t to 10t, I could see it being a problem. But with a fairly compact cassette it shouldn't be getting too loose - especially if you have that chainring. Some bikes put a chain retentioner in place of the front detailer for 1x.

Just my humble opinion, but I don't really need a clutch (and my front detailer does the job as a guide).

Thanx folks! I appreciate the input. Not springing for the derailleur means I can fix myself up with a suspension seat post.
