Phew.... dodged it, now consider how much could have an Eisentraut bike costed in comparison, if you decided to check facts there and not in the book...

I still have Anybody's Bike Book but my copy of Bike Tripping didn't survive the 70s...or was it the 80s?

I've got a better one: "Why did you send the frame without having full payment, dummy?"

I’m not going to admit how far I got into this thread before I realized this was about another notable quoted Albert.

This reminds me of a framed letter my older brother had on his wall. He had spent a few years in the Big House for growing marijuana in New Hampshire (he always was a decade ahead of his time). The letter was from the crime lab and evidence convicting him of a more serious crime (Continuing Criminal Enterprise). It said something to the effect: "The THC content of this sample is the highest this lab has ever measured."

When I noticed the letter he said, "I'm really proud of that."

Anyone who isn't aware of the man behind that letter ought to read this (TL;DR: Eisentraut was responsible for some pretty ****** business practices with partner Bruce Gordon):

https://bikerumor.com/bruce_gordon_final_interview/

BRUCE: Yeah. We agreed to split up. I said, “We’ve gone from 60 bikes a year to 750. We’ve grown this thing with my $27,000 dollars. I think perhaps, in two years, I’ve earned 10%.” I remember Albert saying to me, “It doesn’t matter what you think or I think, it’s what someone is going to pay for the business.” Albert changed the locks. I had invested all my money and I couldn’t get in the place.
Ask any framebuilder who's been around long enough and you'll get to hear a version of the story that is far less sedate than the BG interview.

Of course Bruce Gordon himself was legendarily gruff and reveled in that reputation. He even handed out buttons for a while that read "Bruce Gordon was rude to me" -- and followed that up a few years later with buttons that read "Bruce Gordon was nice to me." I only interacted with him on the phone once in the 1980s -- had some questions about his racks -- he was indeed prickly, but the racks were terrific!

Lot's of characters and more than a few tales of dysfunctional business relationships and sometimes perfidious acts by some of the top builders -- anyone up for the Medici story?
