panniers, chairs, table, UMBRELLA?

We ride one of our tandems every morning. Once or twice a month on Sunday, we extend our ride to a park or the French Quarter, or a lake and set up chairs and a table. We have experimented through the years with panniers and portable chairs and a table. What we have works fine for us. On those hot summer days when we sit out by Lake Pontchartrain where there are no trees, we're thinking of finding a portable umbrella we can stick in the ground for shade. Is anyone carrying an umbrella in their panniers? Can anyone recommend an umbrella that will fit nicely in panniers?

I bought a little portable beach umbrella from Target awhile back for around $20, collapses down to about 2 feet probably and the base can twist in to anchor into sand or grass.

By the way, another fun stop - behind the convention center, on the river right where the West Bank bridge passes over, is a great little area with some bench swings.

bboy314,

I'm not picturing exactly where those bench swings are. Down river from there, in Crescent Park, there are some bench swings by the river. That's just below the French Market. But you're talking above Waldenburg Park, above the Riverwalk Outlet mall, by the Convention Center?

Well, on further review, my stoker says we sat on those swings some years back when we rode down there to see an aircraft carrier that was in the port. We used to ride home that way to get from the French Quarter to Tchoupitoulas to go back uptown. Now we go to Armstrong Park and take the Lafite Greenway (really nice ride).

Here is the best prospect I have found:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...O07D2DMX&psc=1

It folds to 29" which is only 5" longer than our portable table.

There are also many options available in shade umbrellas that clamp onto your chair. Less pole mass and less effort to anchor to ground, plus each of you can optimize your own shade.

Clamping an umbrella to our chairs is not an option on the chairs we carry.
We bought a https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...O07D2DMX&psc=1
We tried it at the "Satchmo Festival" yesterday. It works fine.
It is fairly light and very easy to assemble and disassemble.
It's big enough to fit 2 chairs under it.
Being able to carry 2 chairs, a table, and an umbrella makes picnics more comfortable and fun.
