Since i have been zwifting this winter i have noticed in the night sky stars that seems familiar out of the corner of my eye but always dismissed it. only very recently while climbing up the volcano did i notice what i assumed to be the pleiades. around a few bends, get the vantage point just right, get the giant power banner out of the way and sure enough, the hyades came into view along with orion later on. has anyone else noticed these gems in the night sky?

Where Did Subaru Get Its Name and Logo Design?

Back in 1953, FujiHeavy Industries was created through an investment in five separate companies. Soon, these five entities merged with FHI, including the automobile manufacturing division.

The term “Subaru” is also the Japanese name for a cluster of stars in the Taurus constellation, known to many by the name “Pleiades.” These stars are also known as Messier 45 or “The Seven Sisters,” because according to Greek mythology, they were once Atlas’ daughters: Alcyone, Asterope, Merope, Maia, Taygeta, Celaeno, and Electra.

Surely you’re already wondering, why are there only six stars in Subaru’s logo if it’s named after a constellation of seven daughters? The reason is to the naked eye, the cluster of stars appears to only have six stars–two are so close together, they appear as one big star. Thus, the Pleiades constellation is known for being a “unification of the stars.”

In Subaru’s logo, the large star symbolizes Fuji Heavy Industries and the five smaller stars indicate the five companies that merged to form FHI. The emblem’s background is nearly always blue, as the color of the actual Pleiades stars are blue.

Subaru’s emblem has remained consistently used around the world since 1958, emphasizing the brand’s ongoing, global unity.

I’ve have not noticed that yet but I’ll keep my eyes peeled. Now, I have seen the velociraptor chicken at least twice. I’m sure it’s supposed to be a roadrunner, but it looks about the size of a velociraptor to me.

Unfortunately, I can't carry my telescope on my bike.

But yes, as an (very) amateur astronomer, the Pleiades are one of my favorite parts of the sky to look at when it's clear. There are a few binary stars that are visible with just a good set of binoculars that look fantastic through a telescope as well.

I thought the Pleaides were the SEVEN sisters, the Subaru logo only has six.

What's neat about the Orion constellation that thew Pleiades is in, is that Orion also includes Sirius the brightest star in the sy\ky whether north or south hemispheres. Also, it's easy to locate Sirius because the three belt stars of Orion point to it.

sorry, Orion does not contain Sirius, that is the alpha star of Canis Major chasing after Lupus the rabbit just below Orion.

I seem to recall being able to count all seven stars when i was much younger. i knew of a kid that was able to see the cresent of venus when it was...a cresent. those younger eyes are able to pick out things we old farts cannot.

also, the pleiades are in tarus.

The stars of the Pleaides are featured on my City's flag. Durham is aka the Bull City. Its birthday, April 26, is under the constellation Taurus where the Plieades are located.

I think that since most Subie drivers (especially Outbacks) are driven by seniors, there's no need to describe 7 stars as our eyesight is only good for 6, so why confuse us.

Actually there are many more stars than 7 (or six, like on my Fozzie). Seven are named for the Sisters (Sterope, Merope, Electra, Maia, Taygeta, Celaeno, and Alcyone) and 2 for Mom (Pleione) and Dad (Atlas).

In Hawaii it is Makaliʻi, and when it rises at sunset it marks the beginning of the Makahiki season. According to Kam Schools website:A traditional Hawaiian moʻolelo (story) tells how the constellation Makaliʻi got its name. It begins with the evil deeds of an aliʻi of Kona on the island of Hawaiʻi. He greedily decides to hoard everyone’s food into one enormous carrying net and travels with it to the highest stratum of the heavens, where he hangs it up.

Meanwhile, the ravenous people hastily gather to plan a way to get their food back. A little mouse bravely consents to take on the arduous task. He successfully gnaws on the net until the food drops to the earth. Thus, the constellation takes the name Makaliʻi, the aliʻi who hung the net of food in the stars.
