Mountain bike or Trek 920

I have been riding road bike for last couple of years or so, now I have found a new interest in riding in trails / woodland path. So, I am a bit confused if I should go for a hardtail Mountain bike ex Trek Roscoe 7 or a Trek 920, which has the ability to do all what Mountain bike does plus can go on tours / bike packing.
My idea of riding it just simple trail rides/ towpaths / commutes.

Both seem like overkill for simple trail rides and tow paths. But if given the cliche of only those two, I would go with the 920 due to drop bars.

You are asking about 2 totally different bikes- a flat bar mtb and a drop bar touring/adventure bike. The frame geometry is different, the drivetrains are different, and the riding style is different.

Thanks and yes I understand what you are saying. To be honest, I am not too worried about drivetrains, what's important is the experience, joy and comfort of riding on trails/off-road. Here in UK it rains throughout the year and muddy trails is what we get. So hence these two bike options.
