Color inspiration can strike anywhere.
Do you ever see a color somewhere and say to yourself, "THAT is the color I want my next bike!"

My brother used to have a dark green pickup that I always liked. When I had my De Rosa refinished in 2002 I chose a similar color.

I was on the road a few springs ago and saw some fresh grass along the shoulder with little orange flowers mixed in. I wasn't really successful at transferring the color concept, but I like the bike anyway.

I've had this one stuck in my head for a few months, so I think it's going to happen.

One trick that decorators use is to find a painting they really like and then choose the same color scheme for a room. You could apply the same technique to a bike design.
Duplicating color schemes from cars/trucks is a good idea if you are painting a bike because refinishers can find the color codes and get the exact same colors.

* Ditty does not apply to Black Widow spiders, handle at your own risk.
The reason why I thought of the Black Widow: I once bought a bike on my way to work. Picked it up, put it in the back of the car (small hatchback, seats down), drove to work, after work drove home, then took out the bike and just before putting it down on the floor at home I see a Black Widow dangling from somewhere inside the steerer tube. That's when I thought "hmm… black and red could work well with the color of this bike."
But then, I already had a bit of a soft spot for the red/black combo:

Truth be told, @lasauge, I've been in love with that color since I saw The Lilac Ghost (Le Champion) that @rootboy owns. I can't believe what a drop dead gorgeous build was done on that bike. One of the very finest I have ever seen. There's just something so clean about it. Since then, that color and combination he put together has haunted me ever since.
