I have excess fat on my body. What to do?
Can I just ride it off, or should I plan out specific rides that will more effectively burn fat? Thanks for any advice, and for putting up with my noobosity.

If you have a heart rate monitor, keeping your heart rate at <70% of max will be more efficient at fat burning. You'll be burning less calories per mile than if you were going faster, but you'll be burning the type of calories that you want to burn.

Interval workouts will probably help you burn off the fat faster than long slow rides. Also, cut out all snacks after dinner.

Throw the stick!!!!
I always lose more weight during the base period than I do the rest of the year. The longer rides are what seems to work for me.

liposuction!
but in all reality, the more active you are, the leaner you will get... but you will also need to eat more calories. as long as you push yourself each and every ride, you will become a better cyclist and lose more fat.
that being said, cyclists are notorious for having a weak core. this is where cross-training will be effective. running, swimming, lifting, baling hay... things that use different muscle groups will help utilize your fitness obtained by cycling... and you should lose fat (if your diet is not twinkies).
a vicious circle it is.

It doesn't matter what kind of riding you are doing. It comes down to the old simple fat loss math: calories in less than calories burned. Without counting calories (which I hate), I have a method that works for me: when I ride a lot, I don't eat THAT much more than what I normally eat. The fat will come off.
Just make sure you get more protein when doing a lot of cardio. This has to happen because when you start losing body fat, you are going to lose a little muscle also. Your protein intake helps keeps this to a minimum.

The less calories in than calories burned will reduce your weight - but not necessarily lower your body fat % (infact, it may increase it). You need to increase your metabolism before lowering your calorie intake.
Don't eat late at night (say, after 9pm) and eat a high fiber breakfast...and of course, continue to work out

it's the not eating late at night that is much MUCH easier said than done.
But I have found that on average, if you eat well during the day, you tend to want to eat less at night. And of course, what everyone else has said. But those ginger snaps are oh so good and tempting when you're laying in bed.
My fix: I eat high fiber cereal, apple, banana or said ginger snaps (late at night). Ginger snaps are like crack to me.
Good luck.

Try selling it on E-Bay. You'd be amazed at what people will buy now days.
Seriously though long mid to low intensity efforts will burn off fat. It takes a while. If you set a pretty regular schedule and stick withit you will be amazed at the results that 1-2 months of rides will bring.

I get headaches when dragging my body down too far during a workout. The only thing I've found to avoid this is to drink sugar during the ride which defeats the purpose of the ride to some extent if I'm in weight loss mode (which seems to be all the time lately )
Some people say that you burn a higher % of fat when keeping the heart rate lower but I'm not sure this has ever been substantiated by science. I'm conflicted on this issue since there is so much contrary information available on the subject. To keep it simple I focus on the basic basic equation - burn calories more than you intake and you will loose weight.

Run a 500 calorie deficiency every day. Most people will safely burn a pound a week by doing that.
