The Days Are Getting Longer!

I notice the days are starting to get longer. I have time to notice this because its been so stinking cold here that there is not much else to do... Hope spring eternal and spring is just around the corner!

This also means that the bike forums will probably get less interesting and more mundane as spring time cycling takes up the members time.

You are so optimistic! We're only 9 days into Winter! Build a Snowman, go snow shoeing, ride your bike in the snow, ....whatever you do, get out and enjoy the snow and the cold!!!! That's the best way to make it go by quickly so we can get back to leisurely rides in shorts and "T"s. Yep, if we pretend to enjoy the winter and it'll pass quickly just to spite us.

Happy Trails

You have a great winter spirit cranky old dude! And you live in NY where you experience the "real" winter weather. I couldn't stand the winters in MO, so I moved to SoCal. But I'm such a winter-wuss that now even the 45 deg.F lows here in SoCal are too cold for me.

Still, I dress up in lots of wool stuff and go out for a ride. I keep thinking, "In NY, MN, WI, etc. it's lots worse than this, and dedicated cylclists are still out there riding!"

The weather here has been spectacularly good, even a bit too warm. Clear, sunny, warm, no wind - a cyclist's dream. I'm not a big fan of riding in the dark, so the only real trouble has been the early dusk. I'd encourage all of you northlanders to head to Florida for vacation.

The days may be getting longer, but my life-span is getting shorter.

Is there some way I can balance the two?

Winter Solstice. Around December 20 when the days begin to get longer, even though its going to take a while. In Christian tradition, Dec 25 is Christmas when Christ was born to bring light into the world. Thus the days start to get longer. This works for Northern Hemisphere, but is the opposite for Southern Hemi.

Tonight's sunset is 10 minutes later than it was on December 9th.

But sunrises continue to get later until around Jan 3rd, after which they will slowly begin to occur earlier.

M-Max - Strap on the bike, get in the car, and head on down. The hotels are cheap and the beach and sun are free. I'm right off I-95 and I'd be glad to show you a few good routes. Based on what I hear about the weather up north at present, I can imagine no better way to spend a week in January.

Our Solstice fire worked! I knew the sun would come back if we just made a fire on the darkest day, December 21...
