Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano 11-speed???

Does anyone know if Shimano plans to come out with an 11-speed cassette in the near future?

Shimano 12 in 2012...

Maybe.

IDK.

But that would be my guess.

I hope not. I can barely keep my 10 spd shifting properly as it is. I should go back to 8spd. Lot's of wiggle room there.

I heard a little while back that shimano was pushig for a wider rear spacing standard in order to put in a wider hub with more gears. Something like 12 or 14 sounds familiar.
Doubt that will happen soon though.

Is this correlated to the change in the average American's waistline?

possibly, maybe they're actually pushing for trikes to become the new standard.

can someone tell me again why we need more gears? just curious? I find that my 20 speed has enough range to take me from mashing up the hills to speeding down the flats just fine whats an extra gear going to do for me? add weight and bragging rights?

I agree, but people sure do want more every time something new comes out.

Agreed. If you need that many speeds, buy a triple. I don't see any point in more than 20 speeds at this point in time, especially with bikes being so lightweight.

forget 11, go 90 gears by using an sram dual drive, 10sp cassette and triple.

90 gears and 3 shifters is all part of the fun.

Your 20 speed probably has no more gear range than a lot of the old 10 speed (2x5) you just have more ability to find a gear that is your sweet spot in between... extra gears rarely give wider range, they fill the gaps.

I have a 10 speed with 52-39 and 14-34 freewheel. This gives me gear inches from about 31-100. A 53x11 is obviously higher, but I rarely use a gear over 100 gear inches.

doesn't sram XX aim to let you use a wide range gears while keeping the fine tuning ?

I really think road spacing is going to switch to 135mm. You can add more gears and widen up the chains again for better durability.

It'll probably be 2-3 more years according to Shimano's history.

Why 11 speed? You can add an 11 to a 12-25 (or conversely a 25 to an 11-23), add an 18 to an 11-23

Because people said the same thing when they came out with 6 gears.

Everybody just wants that 16t and 18t. Shimano should make an 11 speed 16-16-16-16-16-18-18-18-18-18-18.

I agree people get crazy with it. They want the 11 for top speed, they want to fill in the gaps with a 16 and 18 and they also want a 27 or 29 for climbing. You can't get it all with 10, 11 or even 12 speeds.
