Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yellow Jersey: is it allright? just curious

Allright, so my girlfriend got me a jersey for my birthday.(plus a powerful headlight) it is yellow. plain, no wack product placement on it or anything, but yeah, its yellow. My question is somewhat hypothetical in that I am going to use it regardless, because dammit, I look good in yellow over red/blue etc.

Do roadies find yellow jerseys offensive on nonracing/nonwinning cyclists? or does it only matter if it is a race related jersey, and not a generic "just yellow" 3 pocket?

if its a plain ol yellow jersey feel free to wear it. i sure as hell wont judge you. if, on the otherhand, that yellow jersey happened to be from a race where u did not earn it, i do not think you deserve to wear it. but that of course is just my opinion.

I don't believe yellow is the color of the leader's jersey for every race anyway? I can't imagine anyone being so pat hetic to actually care if someone else is wearing a yellow jersey. Several of mine are various shades of yellow with a bunch of different generic designs (no printing, state flags, club logos, etc.). It never has crossed my mind that yellow is somehow off limits.

camillo, in your case of the yellow jersey, they are jerseys with logos and team names. by all means wear them. the races that i have been to where a leaders jersey is given have been yellow.

Certainly all yellow is not off limits: CU's color is yellow (ok, silver and gold, but that's not how it works in practice), so there are a lot of yellow jerseys running around town. No one cares.

Oh, I WILL wear whatever I want. I was just qurious as to wether It was considered uncouth in the "roadie" community to wear yellow jerseys. I personally buy my cycling gear in thrift stores (my shorts say "europe bound" on the legs...yeah right)

Some will look down, well, make fun of, a yellow jersey . For some its because of the tours leader jersey is yellow and they will accuse you of being a posuer. For others it will be that high vis colours are Fred, or Fred like. I say dont sweat it and wear what you like, especially if it makes good safety sense.
Just dont wear it to any races, should you participate. Its just bad form.

When my boys were young my wife took them to the bike store to buy me a father's day present. They bought a plain bright yellow Cannondale jersey for me. 15 years later I still have the worn out jersey, in a size too large, and wear it a few times a year with pride.

OP, your girlfriend thinks you are a winner, wear the shirt with pride.

There's a big difference between this

and this.

Wear your jersey. Anybody who gives you trouble doesn't know what he's talking about.

wear what you want. If someone tells you otherwise, they have no clue.

Exception: no black or dark colours in low light conditions, please. unless they have reflective material, then it's okay.

I wore a plain yellow jersey on my solo ride yesterday.

Did anyone notice? I doubt it.

Did I care if anyone noticed? No.

That's legit. You're probably safer with that than with anything else.

Now, a TdF maillot jaune might get a sideways look from me, but I'm one to talk, especially while rocking my Garmin-Slipstream argyle.

Uh, oh. One of my bikes is the same model used to win a variety of races in Europe. I have not won any European races.

Therefore, I should not be riding that bike.

Hmmm......same with a couple of my cycling caps. Possibly a water bottle or two, I'm thinking those bidons are exact replicas of those tipped up between the lips of some race winners, and/or guys who have had made the podium or come close.

I've seen guys on the podium in black shorts, too. I have black shorts....
