I’d raise the derailleur so that the outer side plate (with the lettering remnants) is 1-2 mm above the outer chainring teeth.

Should I flip the cable bolt? Looks like it. So that it goes vertical? That's my guess.

Are you MacGyvering over prior MacGyvering? 😂 Didn’t that originally have a plastic cable guide under the bottom bracket that you can still get for a song on Amazon or eBay? But that’s not to say I don’t think your solution is an outstanding MacGyver.

MacGyver would probably have painted the piece of pipe strap, at least after saving the entire village of refugees or whatever....

@ Bikejambalaya,

The posters above are suggesting you could have used one of these:

Cable Guide

If you do decide to go with such a guide, it will have less friction than what you're using.

its fine. keeps everything congruent. My older friend Rob calls me the mechanic referring to this Charles Bronson in the 1972 film. The mechanic section of this forum really doesn't like what I do with bikes lmao. This is my second account but anyway my dad snuck a ride on it and said he didn't like the handle bars. I warned him previously and suggested riser bars I have. He said they would look weird . So I'm installing now them and stem.

I found neat ones on AliExpress too but it takes the puzzle out of it.

And I love to make use of the spare crap that I have. It kinda bugs me to keep seeing it in with the spare parts for nothing. Holding this useless piece until one day.

I basically did all that just so that I could make use of that curved metal tubing that I already had.

Might cut this later and get a shorter bolt.

I was going to likewise cut down one of those really long quill adapters to be just slightly longer than a standard one, thinking it’d be easy peasy to just cut down the bolt and run some new threads on it. But nope. The bolt shaft diameter was smaller than the threaded bit at the end. I suppose it’s for weight saving and probably not just to thwart my plans, but still annoying. I moved on to something else before seeking out a new bolt, so I don’t know how hard it is to find one that’s just the length you need. Hope you do. Good luck.

Hmm I would just use the same thread and size bolt just a shorter one. Did you do that but use a thicker bolt?

Yeah, that’s what I’ll try next when I get back to it. I haven’t yet looked for a bolt in the length I think I’ll need. I found another solution in the form of a steeper and longer stem for the bike I was working on. But I think I’ll eventually again need a quill adapter that’s slightly longer than the standard ones available but not ridiculously long like the other options. You know, the Goldilocks solution.
