I think there is something magical about that 18 bikes number. Last year, when Mrs. ollo 1st saw my workshop she said "I can't believe you have 18 bikes!" (she mis-counted by a few) In the spirit of honesty, I quickly admitted there were a few more, but I don't count those that are in pieces. Since our marriage a year ago, I sold 2, but now have 2 zero bikes in Florida. Plus, I donated another 1 but also bought a few more. She still tells everyone that I have 18 bikes. Good enough for me. Don
Is it possible we've discovered a natural limit that most keep at or under? @Spaghetti Legs, how many you gots? And if there's an issue, ship one out to the Atelier, we can call it a Zero Bike.

I'm at 18 if I stop counting at 18.

Amazing, @Andy_K has 18 hooks in his garage that are all used.

Andy, I am definitely most possibly almost to the point of considering selling a couple but the Cinelli aint on that short list. I got Andy 56 cm bikes in PDX so don't need a zero bike there, right?

The person who she told I had 15 bikes asked, "Why do you need so many bikes?" These non-bike people! They don't know nuttin'!
BTW, another pro-tip for people avoiding the S-1 limit... One of my "frames" is a fully built bike that I took the wheels off of for repair a few months ago. Now the wheels are stored in a pile with other spare wheels, and the "frame" is hanging from the ceiling between a couple of (mostly) bare frames. Any one of them could become a bike in time for a ride tomorrow if need be.

There's a theme tour - TdZeroBike - Buncha people fly in to a BF'er with 18 hooks, pick out one, off we go. @nlerner is very familiar with this concept.

Fascinating idea. There’s an analogue in the chemical reaction world.
Having a zero bike, or two, or three, may help keep you away from the dreaded bike activation limit, where once arguing starts it won’t stop until an overall lower number of bikes is retained. It sounds like an average bike activation limit is approximately 18. God forbid you add a catalyst like complaining about a spouse’s spending spree on shoes or similar, or you may lower the dreaded bike activation limit.
Arrhenius gave us the equation, don’t pretend he didn’t warn us.
Or another way to say this, if you’re at bike equilibrium, but you add too many bikes (could be one, could be a dozen), you might not find equilibrium again until the final number of bikes is less than the original. Zero bikes exist outside the reaction zone and therefore have no effect on the system.

I'm very grateful that my wife doesn't really care how many bikes I have, as long as she's allow to make fun of however many I have. It's a good agreement.

Oh man, this thread!! Excited almost always to see a thread resurrected, but this one especially!
I have a question for the zero bike cognoscenti. What happens if it's a tandem? Does it still count as zero? What about a motorcycle?
Forgive me for the stupid question, I'm not a mathematician, I'm only a biologist/framebutcher.

If you keep it at a friend's house, it's a zero bike.
Hey, I didn't invent this, my phone did (see post #1 in this thread).

You guys should patent the concept before someone at Netflix reads the thread.
