Back in the Saddle

Almost Zilch due to a return of cancer and associated aggressive treatment.

Been back on the road this week however for some short rides and really hope to make it a much more regular event.

Apart from a loose seat that I discovered within 500 yards or so the bike ran like a clock.

Well done!

Some would have stopped after the first bike and taken up Bowling or turned into a couch potato instead.

Cycling is much more fun.

My wife is getting an e-bike (knee problems make it hard for her to ride otherwise) and I’ve been thinking about getting a hybrid for when I ride with her instead of using my road bike

My cycling was off this year. Managed about 1500 miles on the road. I try for 100 miles a week. But travel, weather and miscellaneous reasons interfered.

50 years ago I'd wheelie my Varsity for half a block. I'll put in the time this spring and get the Domane up in air. 😜

I'm very pleased! Last year I had two rotator cuff surgeries (same arm - 6 weeks post-1st surgery I fell and re-tore the cuff!), and as a result missed over 8 months of riding. This year started off with an upright "comfort bike" (wasn't able to put pressure on the repaired shoulder). Then I missed all of March and at least 1/2 of April due to left knee meniscus repair!

Finally, in late April I purchased a new Cannondale Quick 2 "flat bar road bike". My yearly total for 2023 is just about 2000 miles, 1700 of which were since May 1st.
I'm very, very pleased!

Happy New Year All!

This year has taught me that cycling is so good for me that I really must ride more. I have to figure out how. I'm super busy, and taking a ride for exercise or fun takes some planning. Bike commuting takes less time than riding the subway and then taking a ride, but that requires planning, too. And it requires tolerance of weather and all sorts of conditions and irritations. But it's important. I had a very happy summer since I was commuting 20 miles (round trip) each day. It's not so easy to do now, but I must, somehow.

Here is a picture of one of our favorite spots in the Hudson River Valley, near our weekend house.

I finish my morning MTB ride with a total of 2023 miles for the year. Not really a lot of miles, but they were all on the MTB and all trail other than a bit of connecting miles on pavement. I don't think I swung a leg over the road bike at all this year. I may have ridden the folding bike a few miles, but didn't record those miles. I can say that I rode nearly every day.

OK, now I can answer. It was a good year. Surpassed my distance goal by over 700 miles, with no cycling related health issues (sore knees, back, etc). This year I no longer have shoulder and neck issues due to a strengthening routine. Had many PRs which always feels good to do a bit better until I inevitably tilt the other direction. Continued to learn quite a bit from the brain trust here regarding cycling and human nature. It was a good year.

I looked at the miles on my 3 bikes and my Serotta atx mtb with 1x8 had 364 miles, my Handsome X0X0 3782 miles and my new Canyon CF8 (bought the end of july) had 3203 miles and I did not have computer for it for about a a week or more so would have had probably ~3400 miles.

On balance, a very good year. Overall miles was down quite a bit from previous 7 or 8 years. Landed at about 3,500 miles vs 4,500, give or take a few hundred in previous years. But that drop in mileage was largely due to a 6 week road trip during peak cycling months in the summer. While I brought my bike, it wasn't primarily a cycling trip as my wife doesn't ride. Having said that, the rides I did on that trip were some of the most spectacular I've experienced and contributed to 2023 being a great cycling year.

All done, and veloviewer.com provides a cute little infographic:

My only annual "goal" was 400 hours of cycling, and I accomplished that. Overall, a decent year, and I'm looking forward to more pleasurable hours in the saddle in 2024.

Garmin summary shows 3,270 miles, 272 hours,125,510 ft total ascent, and 107,637 calories.
General goal for 2024 is to increase the mileage to about 4,000. Some longer rides and more consistency month-to-month should be enough to get that done. Maybe training for more speed will help as well.

Winter months are where I tend to slack off. I just don't like the cold and there are fewer daylight hours.

I didn’t hit my goal of 5000mi, but I ended up with over 1000 more than last year (not having kids playing sports makes a big difference - lol). I was able to stay pretty consistent all year, which was my primary objective. I’m feeling pretty good about my fitness, overall.

Thanks for the infographic tip, Terry 😉

Do you have any links to the exercises you've been doing to help with your neck issues?

Sorry, no links. I ‘lift’ barbells and do pushups. Typically i do 50-60 bicep curls followed by placing the barbells behind my neck and raising them straight up about 30-35 times and do about 30 lat raises (barbells by side and raise them up to horizontal. I first saw a PT and had all sorts of exotic band stretches, but none of them seemed to help, but working with weights strengthened the areas. If you search the web on cyclist neck/shoulder pain, you will find quite a bit of info - but I what I do works well for me. Best of luck

Thanks. I've also been the chiro and PT routes and have various stretching exercises. I do a (very) little lifting with barbells and actually just started doing pushups a few weeks ago. Need to stay disciplined and maybe increase a bit even aside from hoping to resolve neck issues. With cycling as my main exercise, my legs and cardio are pretty good for my age but upper body and core needs more attention. I also do 5 minutes of planks most days (not holding one position but varying across several positions).

Anyway thanks again (and apologies for distracting the thread).

Yes I do planks as well as Superman pose. I tend to think that all of it together helps. And complete disclosure, squats and lunges, but not for the anything but legs. Am basically a lazy exerciser but try to get in 3-4 sessions a week besides cycling.

Good On You ! Riding the bike, IMO, is a proper and very effective therapy/treatment.
Especially on those really tough days when the body has no motivation. Even a short (distance) and slow ride had me feeling way better, after having that easy roll.
Anything which helps get the blood circulation going goes a long way to help both the physiology and the mental disposition.
I think cycling is the main reason I'm still here, to annoy all those I know and love.
My best to you.

This year I had 235 rides for a total of 4445 miles and 178,600 feet of climb. My longest was 70.5 miles with 2584 feet of climb. Shortest was about 2 miles when I decided to return home to fix a flat!
