How do I get a "green box" at an intersection on my commute route?

I live in Milwaukie, OR. I love the concept of the green boxes in Portland. Who do I talk to, petition, get in contact with to get them painted on the intersections in my area?

Talk to Brett Kelver, Assistant Planner: 503.786.7657. Brett is the bicycle coordinator for the city. Another contact is Katie Mangle, she's the the city's Planning Director. Her number is 503.786.7652.

Please be courteous, friendly and respectful talking to them -they are good people who've done a lot to help bikes in the city of Milwaukie, including the installation of a bunch of new bike parking in the city. They will likely point out that money is the major issue, and will probably steer you towards bringing up the issue at a city council meeting. Public testimony at a meeting is the most effective way to get it on the city's radar and work towards getting something actually done. Be prepared for it to be a process - it will take time and effort if you want it done.

Other resources:
Heather Andrews of the BTA: heather@bta4bikes.org - she is a Milwaukie area resident and founded the milwaukiebikes Yahoo group: https://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/milwaukiebikes/

Heather can get you in touch with other Milwaukie residents.

City of Milwaukie Transportation Website - Bike page: https://www.cityofmilwaukie.org/milwa...clistinfo.html

Good luck!

Keep in mind that the green bike boxes are an experimental program by the City of Portland. There was a story on Bike Portland the other day about the feds wanting the city to make the next boxes without the green color, only striping, because they felt that too many variables were being tested. Good luck, I think it's a good idea to bring this up with Milwaukie officials.

That said, it is ok for a municipality to put them in as a test without the MUTCD people granting their approval. As a matter of fact, Portland's were installed with their objections and disapproval. I think the MUTCD people have realized that they are working and now want to dictate terms. It's all politics and turf protection...
