Best sub $300 frame

I was deciding between two, but decided to broaden my options.

What frame would you get for sub $300? I want to build up a bike, but as I am a student $300 is really my max-in fact I'd perfer less. What would be the best frame at this pricepoint? I'd like something upgrade worthy.

I am a fan of steel, but if there is a great aluminum frame I wouldnt be adverse to it.
Is there a huge difference between the different types of steel? I'd love reynolds if possible...but don't know too much about the different types.

Any insights would be much appreciated!

I guarantee that you will get the most for your money on Ebay; also, the internet retailers have decent closeouts from time to time.

Really, I see the best deals go on Ebay.

I paid under $300 for an almost new Jamis Dragon Team frame locally...I've seen them on ebay for similar prices.

Ebay/craigslist will be your best bet. That or mtbr.com classifieds, some deals can be had there.

Other than that...

Nashbar has a Reynolds 853 frame for $275-300. Price Point has a few frames in that price range, check those out. Performance has the Access aluminum frame for $170, perpetually "on sale."

There you go, hope we helped.

Thanks everyone.

I'd like a hardtail. I was looking at the nashbar...but the 17.5 inch frame is not in stock. We'll see when they restock them.

Any other ideas/advice would be appreciated. I see some of these deals like the Access, but wonder about quality.

You can get a Marin B17 frame for 99 bucks from Adrenaline bikes. I've had this frame before, and it was VERY nice. Great for aggressive trail riding but also worked pretty good for jumping and 4X too.

https://www.adrenalinebikes.com/store...goryname=Marin

The one's they have are a flat black.

Check out mine(before I switched all the parts over to a FS frame)

That's a medium(size 14) and I'm 6ft. The 16(large) would have fit perfect, but I got one size smaller so my GF could ride it too.

For 4X use I would drop the seatpost and tilt up the nose of the seat more. For climbing/trail riding, I'd raise it and level the seat. Worked really good.

The frame has hydroformed tubing, huge gussets, butted headtube, and good angles. Killer deal for 99 bucks.

The only thing I'm concerned about is that these aluminum frames will ride too harsh. How much of a concern should this be?
All my other bikes have been steel.
