Does anybody make a drop bar with MTB diameter (22.2)?

I have a mid 90's Litespeed MTB that I would like to turn into a drop bar bomber. It has grip shifters and I'd like to use them on the conversion.

Does anyone make a drop bar in MTB diameter (22.2)?

Thanks!

Not sure about that, but you can try number 11 here:

Most 22.2 stems are too wide at the clamp to allow drop bars to get through. The bends probably would not clear.

Does anyone? I'm not sure. It probably depends on the exact shape you want. Soma makes something they call a Lauterwasser bar that vaguely resembles a bar made in the 1930s (which was called a Lauterwasser bar) and it is definitely 22.2. Not exactly a drop bar, though.

Did anyone ever make such a bar? Yes indeed! Chromed steel drop bars found on entry level ten speeds of the 60s-80s were often 22.2 nn. I have a couple that I can offer.

Steel drop bars are that size. I often use them on MTBs converted to drop bar where I wantthe thumb shifters or trigger shifters on the straight portion of the bar. Some people use them and mount their shifters on the lower run of the drop.

Cheers

I've seen split steel bars on department store road bikes so that the grip shifters could be mounted in the middle. Dunno where to get them besides on those bikes, here's some pictures on a blog. I saw a pair or two at the local co-op over the years.

Like others have said, many old ten speeds had steel drop bars that were 22.2. You may be able to find a donor bike for cheap on CL, or only bars at a coop (if there is one nearby).

I've seen bars similar to those and I wouldn't trust them. There's a pretty good size hole right through the bar where it joins the sleeve and to my that's a stress riser and a point of possible catastrophic bar failure. That's why I get the older steel drop-handlebar for any conversions like that that I want to do. With the steel bars you can use thumbshifters on the top of the bar and they take up less room than the grip shifter does and don't get in the way as much either.

Cheers

I think on-one or planet-X made one but it was weird, had a crazy amount of drop and flare.

It doesn't really directly answer your question, but Kelly take offs might be a compromise solution that gives you some of what you want.

I wanted to do the exact same thing with my drop bar Litespeed...looked at campy bullets, older steel bars...etc. Settled on Suntour commands over Kelly's for price, and wish I hadn't.

Why not get a stem that fits the MTB steerer and the drop bars you want? Bonus points if it has a removable face for easy installation.

Maybe not elegant, but functional, Origin8 Drop Bar ends may work for what you are trying to do.

I think the limiting issue is the use of the grip shifters, which were 22.2.

RFC - FWIW, if I had it to do over again...Kelly take offs, v-brakes and tektro levers. Otherwise canti's or mini-vs, STI. I LOVE the flared drops BTW...I have the cheap-o origin 8 version (gary bars) that copied the salsa woodchippers. Main difference is the diameter of the bars...I can't use bar ends and woodchippers can.

I think it's a great project idea and I LOVE my drop bar MTB, though for me it's more urban commuter where yours is probably more gravel grinder/path bike.

How about the Soma Gator bar?

Gator Handlebar | SOMA Fabrications

"Here is your alternative to "alternative drop bars". It's wide and takes MTB grips as well as bar tape. The grip area is long; long enough to run grip shifters and flat bar levers. But the Gator will also take aero levers just like the Junebug. Try it bikecamping, offroading, or touring."

"Drops are 190mm long and have an OD of 22.2"

Here's an MTB (someone on one of these forums identified it as an old Cannondale) that I put steel dropbar on and old brake levers that used to have suicide levers on them. I removed the suicide levers, filed a flat on two opposing sides of each stud and then attached downtube shifters to those suicide lever studs. Works quite well and cost me nothing other than a bit of time becaue I was a ble to use scrounged parts.
