Racing 101

What would you say to a guy that has never raced but wants to?

Training tips?
Technique tips?
How to not fall off?

Make sure you have plenty of group riding experience and hook up with a local club who has a solid racing team. That's a good place to start.

You know, there actually is a Racing 101 book...Bike Racing 101 to be exact. It's written by the Wenzel's and should be a pretty good introduction to the sport. Read it and then join a well organized racing club.

How to get started

1. Find some group rides, fast group rides. Sit in the back.
2. Don't get discouraged if/when you get dropped from those group rides.
3. Go back the following week and do the fast group ride again.
4. If you're dropped a 2nd time, repeat steps 2 & 3
5. Once you're comfortable with the group and pace (and vice versa), take some pulls.
6. Once you're comfortable taking pulls, try some attacks (if it's that kind of group ride).
7. Once you're comfortable with steps 5 & 6, it's time to enter a race.
8. At your first race, repeat steps 1-6, but substitute 'race' for 'group ride'.

As Nike says.....Just do it. You will survive. If you get dropped, go back and do it again.

But....I need to take my own advice!

Mongo- stop by my blog, click on Cat 6 corner (along the right side under categories). More meaty stuff down toward the bottom. Sprinter Della Casa also has some great tips.

At the end of the day, an abbreviated numbered list

1. train harder than you plan to race
2. be prepared for races to be harder than you trained for
3. keep going back
