exchange 6 speed excel for shimano
My wife has a mid 80's 12 speed with a broken 6 speed Excel thread-on freewheel. Does anyone know if a 6 speed Shimano thread-on freewheel should work? They are more readily available and less than 1/2 the price. This bike has friction shifters and is not indexed. This is a pleasure bike and not ridden a lot. Thanks in advance.

Yes, any 6 speed thread on freewheel will work. Friction shifters are very forgiving, they will work with anything.
Are you sure it's broken? Take it off and soak it in mineral spirits first if it's not freewheeling freely.

Thanks FastJake. Yes it is broken. The outer race that tightens on the bearing cracked years ago causing the freewheel to grab and unroll the chain when you try to coast. Finally decided to dig it out of the corner of the garage and fix it to ride or sell.
