Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

4. Bike was very hilly with some climbs as long as 2.5 miles. It was fantastic. I passed so many tri geeks on TT bikes.
5. Run was very hilly which destroyed me. I am an ok runner but have been running on a flat MUP. The hills were pretty long and really slowed me down.

I had a goal of finishing in under 3 hours which would be easy on a flat course but very tough on this one. I believe my final time was 3:07:xx, which I suppose is ok. My tri friend who does ironmans and is decent in all 3 disciplines barely broke 3 hours.

I am bushed.
Congratulations on finishing! I am kind of toying with the idea of doing a tri, but have never been even a mediocre runner. I was okay at swimming though, and apparently I can't do much more than finishing last on a bike TT.

BTW the bike was 25 miles with 2460 feet of climbing. The run was 10k with 596 feet of climbing. I need a tri with a hilly bike like that but a flat run.

You may enjoy it. Tris are more like running events where just finishing is a victory. Not like cycling events where only the winners are winners, if you know what I mean.

Awesome job. I really don't think I could ever manage a triathlon. My swimming skills are limited to survival, as are my running skills.

A swim coach would characterize my swimming as preventing drowning.

My wife swam competitively in high school and was a lifeguard for the last part of HS up until the first year of our marriage. I went to a pool with her once to see if she could teach me how to swim "properly." I can NOT do the off rhythm breathing right. At all. I am way too wired for even ins and outs.

When I was getting ready to go into the Navy, I knew that we had a one mile swim test. I worked at proper swimming form for a while before heading off. I eventually got it down and was able to get the mile done in about 40 minutes which was good enough for the Navy test. After that I promptly went back to my lazy floating around technique.

If I could float, half my swimming problem would be solved.

Nice work, datlas!

Geez, the level of accomplishment in this thread is being taken up a few notches, lately. I might have to start dominating my son's t-ball in an effort to keep up with the Joneses.

All as fast or faster than the superbikes of four years ago, and stupid cheap.
The Trek Speed Concept and the Specialized Shiv are actually expensive bikes. I talked in a post up thread as to why @thin_concrete should avoid a Shiv IMO.

The Felt and the Cervelo are actually substantially more expensive than the Fuji- the Felt is about 2x and the Cervelo about 1.5x.

Again, not saying the Fuji is the right solution for OP, just trying to convey the facts correctly. I just happens to be much less expensive than the other options.

Strava's "threshold" HR zone is a range that is mostly below threshold. For me, my LTHR is right around the the high number that Strava lists as the upper end of that zone. Therefore, when I ride a TT, I will be in zone 4 for around 97-98% of my time. Riding over that, in Strava's zone 5 is indeed very hard. If the ride felt very hard, that makes sense.

If the ride did not feel that hard, there could be other factors- LTHR is set wrong, dehydration, heat, adrenaline. My first TT I ever rode, I was in zone 5 for 48% of my ride. I was full of adrenaline, I guess. I won a 2nd place ribbon and was hooked.
