Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In a cycling funk

Haven't ridden in about 10 days. Keep talking myself out of it...Once I reached my 3000 mile goal this year I kind of just lost some enthusiasm. It's not a HTFU issue, I just don't feel like riding. How do I break the funk?

Doing something excessively leads to boredom/loss of interest, obviously haha. Give it time, you'll learn to miss it. Everyday when it was warm and I was taking the bus back from college, I saw group rides all the time. Stuff like that just made me wanna ride =D.

Just get over your goal reaching and get on your bike.

I did that after my last century, took too long of a vacation and ended up in a rut. Got back on by doing some easy spins, soon enough I wanted to ride more and more.

Do repeats on Palomar. I did this last week. You have no idea how good you have it.

Or just eat pie and be happy. That's always a good option.

Wow if I quit when I hit 3,000 miles I wouldn't have been on the bike for about 8 months now.

Leverage your competitiveness and set more goals:

Force yourself to schedule rides with others. You'll show because you promised to meet and once you do, your competitive juices will help motivate you the day of the ride and afterwards (especially if you get dropped on a regular basis ). If you don't know any other riders and can't find a group ride, you need more goals.

If you have a Garmin or an iPhone with Strava on it, track and try to best your times. Track elevation gain. Find new routes with more challenges.

I get bored too. To combat the same ole' thing I try the following:
a. Take out the MTB vs the road bike
b. Change routes
c. Schedule a stop for ice cream 3/4 into the route!

I'm in that funk right now. Only riding twice a week. Trying to get over a cold...plus the weather cooling off...hasn't given me much motivation to go out.

I'm in a bit of a funk too I seem to be coming out of it though, I ride my mtn bike on the trail on the property a lot since I got it up and running, thanks to that I wanted to get back on the road, planning a 60 something mile day trip for tomorrow now.

It will pass. I have been feeling that way about a week now, got out and went around a 6 mile loop here at the house and feel like I want to do it again. 43F. Burr! It comes and goes.

you ridin solo? you hammerin on every ride - even if only for a few minutes?
find yourself on the same roads all the time?

find a club with steady, easy pace 2up ridin in the winter, mixed (M & F) is moe betta
small ring (39) the whole ride - do this often - you;d be surprised how fast you can go in the 39...

explore new roads, double-backin is allowed...

SD has some mity fine winter surf...

Stand in front of a full length mirror butt naked.

After the screams of horror subside and my vision returns said motivation drastically increases.

Lots of good suggestions here. I find that if I don't want to ride.... I just don't ride for a while and eventually I get some pent-up demand to ride. In the meantime, it's a good time to wrench on the bike a little and maybe do some upgrades (which will increase your enthusiasm to get back on the bike).

It's been a weird year for me. I've all but stopped commuting, but at first I was riding more. During the heat of the summer it was just no fun to ride during the day but I rode almost every night. Then things cooled off and so did my frequency. I finished tiling my kitchen (a project that probably should have been done in a few months but took FOUR YEARS). I figure I'll coast through the holidays and start riding more diligently in January.

I'm thinkin' you should appreciate living in an area that has such nice weather. I was out for a while today with the temp @ 38 degrees. Actually, I really enjoyed it. Struggling with putting the bike away for the winter...

Quit biking for good. PM me for an address where you can send all your stuff.

Seriously, sometime a break is good. Set a new goal to start riding again in two weeks.

It'll pass. You went so hard into this whole cycling thing it's not too surprising you're having a bit of burn out. On the next sunny day, try doing some cycling with the goal of enjoying the scenery and not caring at all how long it takes....maybe in an area you've never gone before. It's good to have a reminder that cycling can be fun too.

Saturday was a beautiful day in your area. Try forcing yourself on a few early morning rides. I guarantee when a warm weekend afternoon rolls around you will want to jump on your bike again.

I have a hard time taking it easy. I'll go out with the intent of just enjoying the ride...but then it always turns into a hammerfest.
