Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Heh, just wait until the little buggers become nursery school/kindergarten age, bringing home a sample disease from every other bugger in the class, one after another. The horror . . . .

My grand is having a BD party next week. I’m deciding whether I should even come, he won’t miss me in all the excitement. I’ll have them take pictures, that’s good enough for me.

The horror . . . .

When Mrs. GJ started teaching, I swear every other week we caught something. Colds, stomach flu, etc. One cold/flu was so bad I ended up getting bronchitis, which gave me twitchy lungs for a decade after.

Liz is gonna have to start working again before the year is out.... then we get to enjoy all of the pathogenic delight that daycare will bring. One scientist salary isn't enough to cover a family of three (hopefully of 4 eventually) in San Diego, no way Jose

Home again! 6 days away. 5 nights sleeping in hotel beds. Hours spent in airports. I understand there are people who do this sort of thing for a living. Yuck.

The Boys and Mrs. GJ had prepared a lovely dinner of Nibbles for my arrival - Salumi, cheese, crackers, beer. Just what I needed. And of course the dogs went nuts. Well, Rango didn't so much go nuts as just radiate happiness at me. AND of course followed me around the rest of the evening. Get a Greyhound and you'll never need to poop alone! Dory was all wiggly, but would skitter away if I tried to pet her, until I sat down in my comfy chair in the LR, so she could hop up on the piano bench next to it for skritchies. She has a very particular idea of how she wants her skritchies.

I seem to have caught some kind of mild cold. Not the "Snot rockets galore" WhyFi has, just mild sore throat and slightly runnier than normal nose. Mrs. GJ has something, too. We're being cautious about crossing the streams.

ahhh … the joys of daycare …

#beentheredonethat

if it makes you feel any better - mrs t2p sister remained home with her kiddos and they had more ailments (including ear infections) than the two little t2p kiddos who were in daycare 3 days per week

We had a good ride today although I had a stupid flat. I found the glass shard easily and put in a new tube and since I was with a group I used my CO2. I use those cheap 12g cartridges so the PSI was “only” about 65 but it was a front tire and 25mm so plenty. But my friend who put the bike together was concerned that he did not hear the bead “pop” and upon spinning the wheel there was indeed a slight raise/hop in the tire. They hit it with a few strokes of a pump and got a “snap” and the hop in the tire was gone.

This same thing happened with my previous flat but NEVER before.

The tires are some Vittoria ones he put on the bike rather than the Conti GP’s I usually use.

The front tire was fairly worn anyway so when I got home I pitched it and put in a new GP5000. I did need the bead Jack but got it on without too much hassle.

There was no “snap” of the bead with the Conti, so I am guessing this is a quirk with the Vittoria tires. Both are clinchers (not tubeless).

Any thoughts on whether this is typical for some tires or tire/rim combos??

Last night, Mrs tm and I tried to remember the popular songs in the US that were sung in a foreign language.

Out of the ones we could remember, this was our favorite:

Catchy tune. On today's ride, it was in my head the entire time.

65 mile ride. Started with a group of about 10 and most were going to the beach. Some of us opted to avoid that circus and stay on the inland side of the Santa Monica mountains. Still, there was more traffic than normal because of one of the main canyons being closed. Some of the traffic was probably people looking for alternate routes.
It was pretty foggy and hard to see at the top of the ridge so we went back down instead of riding in the thick fog. It was nice not chasing anyone and I don't even feel too trashed.

Tedeschi/Trucks are both killer musicians. I remember my dad playing my some early Susan Tedeschi bluesy stuff when I was real little

Confirmed by test?

Both Mrs. Badger and I had a horrible go-round with it in December. Hope yours isn't too bad. We are having to wait out the six-months' recommended interval before getting our next shot.

Yep, confirmed.

So far, so good. But after a week of not riding due to travel, I had really been looking forward to getting back on the bike tomorrow. Poop.

The culprit was a thin shard of glass.

I would estimate my F:R flat ratio is about 1:5, so way less common…but it does happen.

I tell patients that if they have a “cold” it’s 50-50 that it’s Covid.

I still suggest testing because Covid is very contagious even if the symptoms of current variants are not much different from a cold. And I do not recommend Paxlovid for treatment unless the patient is very frail and high risk.
