How did you keep this from tiping backwards?

I don't want to sound like a snob or anything but I don't think I have a beater. I intended for my Phantom Uno to be a coffe/errand/knockaround bike but it seldom see any action. I thought the Boarala might fit that bill but I put too much care into it. I guess the closest thing is the Grizzly I have using to run the market the last few weeks.

It does have a rack on it now for the panniers, which get hooked on the shopping cart. then I scan as I shop and the Giant and everything is packaged up ready to go.

An old Burley D'Lite kiddie trailer provided the frame and wheels. The rest is custom.

BG, I suspect the frame weight keeps the bike from tipping backwards!

It's the beatup dark green Univega trifecta:

Actually, the only thing that's "beat" on my FrankenVega is the paint job. I started with just the frame, fork & headset, and tailored all the other components to my exact preference. She's sporting only minor changes to the drivetrain since the photo was taken. This is the bike I leave locked up in town, or take when there is a chance of rain, rather than my other bikes. That is the entire reason I built it. But she's right up there with my other bikes for ride, comfort & performance.

It is currently this one, a 96 Diamond Back Sorrento frame attached to nearly everything from the parts bin. Except for the saddle and tires which were bought new. Now, the saddle has been replaced with an older used one, and it sports a mtb rear rack.

It can do the gallon-of-skim milk run in 2.3 parsecs.

Yeah it would be this Trek 420 I picked up on the cheap. Planned to flip it but took a ride on the stupid thing and just cant part with it. I get to the guys house and apparently his buddy the bike mechanic built it for him. Well his buddy may have strangled him when he found out what he sold it for. Gone was the factory 27's on Helocomatic hub and its its place is 90's 105 SC 7 speed hubs laces to polished CR18's. Nice Shimano Aero SLR levers. Had Acera Derailleurs that I swapped out for some early 90's LX and threw 7 speed Indexed Bar ends on it and topped it off with a Fitzik CX saddle. Rides awesome, climbs like a goat. Its the bike I take to Atlanta. Did the 30mil Beltline tour on it a few weeks ago. I keep fighting the urge to paint it to get rid of the horribly beat paint and make it look more attractive to a thief. From 20 ft it looks like the homeless guy's bike. from 5 ft you notice quality parts.

Its wearing a matched set of 700x28 Conti Ultra Sports since this picture.

The other one was I wanted a 26 inch wheel all arounder/single track touring sort of to replace the 420. Failed at that. ran across this 890 as a frame and fork. Did some research found out it was a one year only model. Built it with parts out of the parts bin (yep the bars and bar ends were a REI scratch and dent score off a Raleigh Sojourn that got damaged in shipping and yes thats Brooks leather tape). It was suppose to be all weather and eventually the Brooks saddle and tape are getting moved to a vintage build.

I picked up this Sekine a few week's ago for $30.00
I have the identical bike in better condition. It looks ok in the pic,
but the paint is pretty rough.

I'm going to turn it into a ss. The only problem, is that
my wife thinks she might keep it for herself.

My brand new upgraded beater. Very similar to the old one, even recycled a lot of the old bike for better quality parts. Cheap, rides well, and should be strong enough to carry me and my kids for another 8 years (or more).

Originally bought for $50 on CL; many upgrades since... It's a Trek 820 T (I assume the 'T' stands for touring; it has extra long chainstays), with a long wheelbase and it rides like a big fat lazy tomcat.

I had this one hanging in my shed as a frame and fenders for years. Just got a bug up my behind to make something out of it one day. It was a 64 Dunelt Sport.

It is fitted with the very first, never to be world famous, 'MK II Model A Cheesy 2 Speed Fixed Gear Hub''. When I park it somewhere unlocked, I leave it in Neutral. That way, if someone takes a running leap to pedal away on it, their nads need to be scraped off the top tube.

started as this

the more I rode it nicer parts started to go it and it wasn't much of a beater anymore. It was my daily commuter and social bike.

the last setup, with about 100 changes inbetween

I dont have it anymore though. This one is to be

Although, I don't know if I can ever have a true beater because I care too much about what I am riding and how functional it is and it looks like many here are the same. This will be the first bike built from my pile of parts already lying around, not transferred over from another frame.

my "beater" bike is my main ride..

Got the frame with seat, cranks and rear rack from LBS. All of the other parts came from donor bikes which were parted out. (i actually MADE $ building this bike up) even the bar tape was reused

Nevermind the singlespeed I posted on page 3 (30ppp), of all of my bikes, this is the one that gets beater detail. I've since swapped out the saddle, and found an XT RD to match the front, even though it came stock with suntour components. I think it has a new rear wheel and is 8 speed now, but I can't really remember how it was when I got it.

It's slow on the knobbies, and the bars are a mile wide, but it's so comfortable and just... easy. I just toss it in the back of my truck and pull it out when I can. It's dirty, it's scratched, and it has a sizable dent in the toptube, but I love it. Sometimes I forget how fun it is to bunnyhop curbs and dart around on all kinds of marginal paths. I feel like I'm 15 again on this bike.

This is the only bike I've taken out of the pool of donations before it was stripped for parts at the coop.
