For the extra money that this thing costs, I can't really see that it would work better than just using a regular hub motor and hanging a battery off both sides of the wheel.

High torque/power hub motors have a tendency to twist free of the dropouts unless you use a reaction arm. This design has reaction arms already built in and doesn’t push any torque through the axle.
Not saying that makes it overall better, but that is a noticeable difference.

And no, most engineers don't wish they could take something simple and over complicate it. People have done this before, maybe not the same exact way, but it didn't revolutionize bicycles then and it won't do it now.
