Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ravenmore wheelkiller has moved on to gears

Bummer. Sheared one of the cogs on my cassette in half on the bell lap of the crit tonight. Unfortunately it was a very useful gear...

A lesser wheel would have yielded to the cog.

Did you win?

I broke a cog on an MTB once. Shifting was a little more challenging, but it worked ok, in general.

Teammate of mine won - with the points he got tonight he moved up into the two's. I didn't want to bridge anyone to him of course but I was feeling good when *chunk*. Sorry not meaning to brag or anything - just reminded me of when I cratered a wheel (or two) in races.

I did go to the back of the pack and sort things out during the last lap. Figured out what gears I had left and then spun like crazy. I think I got maybe a top 20? Not sure. Team had a good showing and that's what matters.

This is what happens when you have massive guads. You will learn in time to harness their power.

So, uh...what kinda cassette do you have?

Was it an ultra-light, racing use only brand?

Hrm. Last night had all sorts of good stories... Broken bikes, broken cogs, broken bones... Even a fist fight!!

I somehow missed seeing you out there. Or maybe I was too entranced with registration to notice. Sorry!

Don't ask, don't tell

Is it a bad omen that I have Veloce cassette sitting right in front of me while I contemplate a cog change for riding into gail force winds?

Hey Chris - I saw ya at the registration table actually. You looked pretty busy and I was in a rush to make it to the start line as I was running late, so I just handed my money over and bolted. Heard about the crash when I was at Mellow Johnny's today. Said several bikes were toast? That blows. Didn't hear about the fist fight. Something intrinsically funny about skinny dudes in spandex fighting.

A friend broke a Campy cog while chasing up a hill. The 2 halves fell out and the rest of the cogs flopped around and made it pretty hard to ride. He was standing at the time and almost went down, but saved it.

Well, those would be fun too, but I meant the cassette. I've never seen a snapped cog, sounds interesting.

Yeah, I need to bring my gear and shoot one night. If I race 2 races though I'm pretty knackered and usually just want dinner, a beer, and bed. Not necessarily in that order.

Rav I just don't understand how you are doing this to your equipment. No offense but I know a lot guys who I'm sure are putting out way more power or are heavier that are not breaking wheels and drive train bits like you. Honestly I'm puzzled.
