Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lost that cycling loving feeling ...

Used to ride 5-10k every year uptil last year.

Every free moment was a time to ride.

Now ... Done about 1.5k and no interest in riding at all.

Any suggestions to get back that loving feeling?

Its like cycling disfunction.

Pull the bike out, get on it and take it for a spin around the neighborhood.

I wouldn't think that anything we say here would be enough to make you want to hop back on the bike and go ride a century. But...ya never know. I would suggest that you try to change up the usual routes that you ride. That might mean hauling the bike to locals miles away from your usual starting point (home). New scenery..."exploring"... might get you back in the mood.

These are definite symptoms of an N+1 deficiency.

Bike Commuting/Errands/Utility Cycling?

The miles and effort can really add up.

Plan a bike tour before it gets miserable out?

Stop training, and just ride. I like to ride to my favorite sandwich shop sit outside and people watch. Ride to the beach and sit. I did a few metric century rides and hung out the the after ride events eating food and talking to people. Stop thinking that more miles is better. I spent a lot of time this summer at the velodrome. For me, it is fun doing some super hard efforts and when you have had enough, you just pullover and go home. I found it fun listening to all the instructions that the coaches were giving their riders. It was fun. Care less about miles and more about fun.

This. Find a new activity that makes time stand still for you. Do that for a while. Come back to cycling when you start to want to.

Exactly. I love riding, but as if it becomes "work" I'll stop and find another hobby. I want to enjoy life as much as possible.

OP, I'm sorry to hear about this.

Do you ride a 54-55cm bike?

I'M KIDDING. As the others have said, it has to be fun. Just go out and ride your bike, someplace other than where you've been riding. Find a local cycling club group and ride & socialize with them (not wide open A ride).

In my youth I was a competitive athlete. Went to college on a football scholarship (QB) and also played baseball (SS). When I began cycling in my 30's I was filled with that competitive testosterone. Up until last year. at age 72, I was so focused on being faster, stronger, better, that I wasn't enjoying riding. But, mid way through the season something changed. When my Saturday club ride started getting over 40 miles I just said no. That's not what I want to do. I enjoy my little TTs and my 25-35 mi. rides I can ride them hard or I can focus on playing with gear selection or different cadence when climbing. And, I can ride and particularly climb at my pace rather than the group pace. I stopped caring about how others saw me as a cyclist. I started enjoying being on the bike. This year for my 73 birthday my gf bought me a CAAD12 and with that bike and a new attitude I have been having more fun than I've had in years. The strange thing is that I'm also riding with "souplesse" as the French say. In my youth I was stronger but I've never been better.

Lots of things that could be wrong... Personal situation going on, change in health (physical and/or psychological), etc.

Keep in mind that the more you'll pedal, the more you'll want to. Gotta love Newton's first law.

Put some Righteous Brothers music on and crank it up. That might help. Maybe.

How about some paradoxical intention?

Sign up for something unusual with no forethought. An alleycat. An extreme enduro. Something.

We've got a local shop giving patches for completing cool local virtual fondo routes or completing a map of MTB trails.

I second trying out cyclocross...or a complete new discipline of biking. Maybe mountain biking or even just commuting. It might push the right buttons for you. Just "training" for cyclocross is fun as hell.

Hell, I completely slid this year and have taken more time off the bike than I have the last decade...but I bought myself a motorcycle and have been spending time riding that instead. In the end you got to spend time doing what makes you happy.
