Selling gitane tandem that's been fully rebuilt and tuned. New break and shift cables+housing. New Shimano CX50 brakes and break pads. New rear derailleur. New bar tape.

Runs great!"
Looks like it was stripped of the interesting bits, the MAFAC cantilevers, faceted fender, chrome racks, and put back together with stuff from the parts bin.

I've noticed this too for other ads, but I'm not sure if the trend is increasing or steady. It's really disappointing to come across a nice frame that's supposed to have nice bits, but it has common bits, and is still priced like it's equipped as specified.
for example:
https://columbus.craigslist.org/bik/...074744336.html (sorry, there's no really good pictures here)

The catalog specifies Campy SR, but it's Shimano 105/600EX all over as far as I can see. I'd consider it at 1/4 of the asking price.

That 770 is still a great frame, but yeah, the parts are throwaways. I picked up a 770 not too long ago for more than this, but it's all original Campy SR with tubs + clincher wheels.

I have a 105 front brake and 600 front derailleur that have been parked on eBay for months at about $12 w/ free shipping. They're yours for shipping if you want them.

They are excellent parts... to rebuild bikes with. Not to sell. The irony is because they are durable, and there are probably thousands of 600 and 105 parts that have relatively little milage on them, the re-SALE value is remarkably low. Same seems true for Campy Veloce, which is a decent 9 speed system- all of which allow some really good quality modern-type bikes to be built for ??? (Not much). Even less with donor bikes and wrenching skills. I'm afraid the $100 clunker challenge is not much of a challenge any more, after a little judicious buying and selling...
On the other hand, I have some really sweet bikes...

I've purchased from seller before, was a good transaction. Definitely looks to be parting out things, but the NR stuff I saw at the time of the first listing didn't date-match to the approximate range of that bike's serial number.

Regardless, those are nice bikes but I'd probably bargain down to $350-ish.
I think the condition on this one counts for a bit more.

+1; last challenge, I was sorely tempted to enter TWO bikes for < $100 total, but ran out of time to ride each one the required 100 km.

Nice Bertin Road Bike - $250 (Puyallup)

Excellent condition French built Bertin. Lugged steel frame constructed with Columbus tubing.

21" top tube center to center.

21" seat tube center to top.

31" stand over height.

700c wheels that are true.

Shimano Golden Arrow group.

Sweet machine.

$250 CASH

Not a brand I've seen too often in the US, but Columbus Tretubi/Shimano 105 "Golden Arrow" makes for a very nice mid-range roadie. Weren't these Belgian bikes?

This would be a fun bike to build up. The seller seems to know his stuff or at least there is good info on the frame in the ad. The ad has the threading for the HS and BB and good sizing info.

Cheap Trek - Already Gone

I was going to post this... Really I was. But then I decided to pounce instead. Called the seller 22 minutes after the ad went up, and I was first. Beat every flipper in the Twin Cities - he told me his phone didn't stop ringing until he pulled the ad down.

This one may be my first flip. It's in excellent condition and all-original. What ever happened to that appraisal / What's-it-worth thread?

That, friends, is a non-steel steal! For that price, I would actually consider allowing an aluminum bike in the house.

It's not a thread, it's a whole section - https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...th-appraisals/ - post a new thread there.

(Someone should start a Cheap Trick tribule/cover band, with a C&V bike cheapskate flavor added, and call it "Cheap Trek".)

Cool frame, could probably use a bit of oil on the chain. Comfy seat! Lock may be available at additional cost.
