Don't install Garmin 520+ v5.40 update
My 520+ updated itself last night from software v5.30 to 5.40. The update took something like 30 minutes, that was a concern. Now just back from a ride, it will not upload the ride to my phone. I deleted and re-paired the phone connection, no joy. It does connect to the phone, but when trying to sync the ride the little scroll circle freezes around 3 o'clock. Tried to connect to my laptop via the USB cable and the 520+ will not connect with the computer either. The Garmin Connect app doesn't see it and the computer doesn't recognize it as a USB device either.

Are you certain the 520 was turned off and restarted after the update. I had an 820, my sons, that didn't shutdown and only went to sleep. So the update wasn't fully applied.
Also a reset is commonly the first thing to do for such issues.
Call Garmin. Call don't email. They've never failed to help me no matter how long out of warranty any of my devices are. If their phone queue is full, leave your number when asked and they'll call you back when your turn comes up in the queue.

Yes, it was shut down after the update. I powered it down and then restarted it after it finished. I powered it down overnight, then turned it on this morning for a ride. It worked fine until I finished, it won't upload or connect. It shows version 5.40 as the software version on the device. I will call them, but have to wait til tomorrow.

Update. I hit the sync button on the phone app and walked away. It finally uploaded the ride after about 45 minutes. It was only a 20 mile ride, so not a huge data file. Normally a ride uploads in a few seconds. I started a new ride on the 520+ and then saved it after about a minute. It uploaded normally. So I will just have to see what happens after my next real ride.

I’ve noticed similarly predictable bad performance with my 130 as well. I have to reboot the GPS and close/relaunch the app in my phone and only then does it begin the several minute long process of uploading my ride data.
