Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lizard Skins has clear chainstay protectors. Tell him not to be a cheap-ass.

Then again, I guess that not everyone wants a semi-permanent chainstay protector. I tend to ride heel-in, and I sometimes brush the stays, so I like having them on.

Just installed cameras around my house. Wife didn’t sleep well while I was gone. They seem to be working pretty well.

Waiting for it to warm up some, before going out for the third day in a row. It being Sunday, I'm gonna try the commute by bike. It's been five or six years since I rode in the city. Thursday and Friday, this week, we are due to have daytime highs at or near 70A. Base layer weather.
Happy Birthdays all around

Of course I'm not really serious, it's just that she's such an overwhelmingly active puppy, it's draining keeping up with her. They say they'll calm down in time, I can't wait. These past 7 months already feel like they were 3 years or so.

One other thing that I forgot to mention - holy **** are the metallic brake pads crappy out of the box. I've only ever used resin pads and, while they did get better after bedding with the rotors, they were still great brand new. These metallic pads, though - yow. Almost as bad as rim brakes.

Oh, I am happy to report that I did a fine job with the hydro fill and bleed, though.

Dog.

A puppy if you're young to middle age, a mature rescue if you're older.

Heathpack You can accomplish a lot of the resistance training at home with free weights and pushups, along with routines like squats, lunges, planks and the likes. Kettlebells seem to have supplanted dumb bells these days.

we have a 13 year old lhasa that barks at everything. We had a 3 year old lab but it wasn’t working with the house so a friend took him in. She wanted the cameras so that’s the route we went.

If it barks at everything then that's not a reliable sentinel. I've owned Rottweilers and they are awesome family dogs that bark seldom, only when there's a credible threat, and then can actually back up the bark in the face of a serious threat.

Primitive scans of slides. The first is Cazzorla. You can sort of make out the snow to the right of the castle. The second is the Sierra Nevada sticking up through the clouds seen from the road to El Puerto de Tiscar.

Yeah, they seem near impossible to bed in in a parking lot. A couple times I just about died doing metallic bed-in intervals on full squish MTBs in the PHX heat.

Luckily we sold way more mid-range rigs with resin pads, so I only almost died a couple times.

I'm aiming for pretty much any town about that size. In WA, OR, ID, eastern CO,WY, MT. Maybe northern UT, NV, or CA too.

Might opt for bigger cities if there's a place that wanted to pay me lots

Me gusta.

PS Here is a pic from November. Sierra Nevada in far background. The Alhambra in near background.

Hey Heathpack it’s fine to get a DEXA. But bone density changes at a snail’s pace (with rare exceptions like high dose steroids or hyper parathyroidism), so typical interval is 2 years (or more).

You can maintain good bone density in your hips by just being sure to take frequent walks. Weights are ok but not mandatory.

Be sure you have enough DIETARY calcium, 1200-1500 mg/day. I am NOT a fan of calcium supplements, try to get it from food.

It's not nearly as desolate of a drive from Leavenworth to Wenatchee as it used to be. I'm certain it's changed to almost unrecognizable, but that's pretty much everywhere now. I like that area a lot.

I watched this (non-technical) talk a few weeks ago. The author is convinced we're going to see significant breakthroughs "in the next five years." First stem cell therapy, and then in fixing genetic defects.

Even if true, will most people be able to afford it?

I didn’t watch it, but am VERY skeptical. Most of my patients who are lucky enough to be healthy and sharp in their 90’s tell me they are pretty much ready to go when their time comes.

It’s lovely out today. The sun is out and it’s in the low 50’s. Mrs datlas and I are going on a hike in Valley Forge after lunch. Had a good easy 30 mile ride earlier.

Compared to resin, how do they perform after they break in? These came with Ultegra levers/calipers, so I'd hope that they'd be decent.
