T shirt form the "Steel is Real" ride. The guy who organized it had a collection of posters and every year a different one is on the shirt as well as the registration postcard they mail out.

I wouldn't call it too crazy, but this chap is smoking it, uphill passing a racer on his retro direct drive cycle.

Dawn's early light covers the practicing soldiers.

It's poetic... so what it would sound like in English is "Dawn's early light covers the practicing soldiers." and it's kind of interesting that the citizens are bearing arms; the word/character used isn't "military"... there is no differentiation between soldiers and military because (then, in that context anyway, in theory) the militia is made up of "the people" who claimed the right to bear arms.

There is more than a little irony there from my perspective.

See post #140 of this thread for an explanation of the symbolism that puts it in the context of the era.

On the contrary, the Wrights would have been bitter if not incensed, as the poster depicts a Bleriot monoplane. It was bad enough that the Bleriot outperformed the Wrights' contemporary model but even worse, the Bleriot was outselling the Wright model. However, the ultimate insult was that Bleriot refused to acknowledge the Wright's wing warping patents, which were the subject of litigation in both the USA and Europe. The Wrights had sold their European patents but were still involved in the legal proceeding and would have still been earning income from the patents on a royalty basis. Given the Wright brothers egotistical, litigious and monopolistic nature, any references to a Bleriot design would been the source of contempt, as it would have represented legal battles, loss of income and their diminished status. While the Wright brothers were pioneers of powered flight, they were also the greatest thorn in it's early development, until the Great War threw litigation out the window and made rapid development the priority.

Thank you for that explanation, that was an eye opener.

One question: what is the symbolism of the hand sign?

Yes, it's interesting how different generations view things. It's easy to misinterpret older pieces of art, literature, music or cinema, without some background of the era. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of the symbolism, if any, of her (right) hand gesture.

Chains, nudity, sign of the horns, clearly heavy metal well ahead of the times.

According to wiki, many possible meanings including offensive ones in Italy.

And, judging by the background, unless I miss my guess, they're in the process of doing Amsterdam.

If the artist could have effectively depicted that the lead cyclist was pedaling backwards due to the low gear of the retro-direct drive, that would have made it crazy, at least for modern cyclists.
