7900 crank with 7800 Dura Ace gruppo?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have the opposite issue. I have full 7800 and prefer the look of it on my vintage-looking steel bike. BUT, I want to get rid of the side pull shifter cables that stick out of the shifters and go with the cleaner look of 7900+ where they all go under the bar tape.
If I upgrade the shifters, I pretty much have to upgrade everything else except maybe the crank, don't I?
The 7800 silver RD is so much prettier

No, 7900 and 7800 use the same cable pull patio..

7900 shifters will work as well with your 7800 as they do with anything. IMO that's not saying much. Do some searching and you might decide to try 6700 or 5700 instead.

+1

7900 shifters aren’t great, but if you need hidden cables and you want to keep everything DA, that’s the only choice.

That being said, I wouldn’t do it. 7800 is functionally perfect.
