I agree completely in my rational moments, when I'm not under the influence of @LAJ and @WhyFi and I don't even think those ghastly straight gauge spokes are slowing me down all that much.
Power meter? Nah. I already know the bad news.
It'll all get eaten up in the frenzy of spring boat spending, anyway.

Vain, But Lacking Talent
Me and power meters have everything to do with delusions of grandeur, but isn't that what drives the economy?
For reals, though. I have always wanted to buckle down and really work at cycling. I'm going to have some fun with it this year and try to chart my progress in terms of weight and power. I have a lofty goal of potentially being able to finish with a lead bunch in some of the local gravel events.

I don't think a power meter is delusions of grandeur any more than GPS or HR straps are. It's just more information for anyone who's interested.

One thing that the PM did for me was make me realize how wrong my Zwift setup was. I detailed it a few pages ago, but I was genuinely on the order of 30-ish watts down because I didn't have the roller tight enough on the rear tire. This has actually made zwift less depressing. I was always wondering why even the flats seemed a little slow and climbing was so dismal on the virtual rides when it really wasn't all that bad in real life. I just didn't have any local long climbs to really compare it to. This also means that my FTP ramp test might be way off. I did it a couple of weeks ago before I realized I had my trainer set up wrong and got 184. I will do another ramp test at the end of this month and it would be nice to be at 200 or so.

Nice thing about mixed fleet boat racing is it's handicapped, so slow can win if it's rated well.

VERY far off. It's an estimate but I would say easily off by half sometimes. I would not pay it ANY attention as it does not consider wind/draft and other variables.
Not useful IMO.

Its a slight annoyance I have with living where I do. If it's going to be as cold as it gets every winter, I would at least want it to snow enough to be able to participate in snow based activities. But we only get a few significant snows every winter, and typically only one or two that dumps a decent amount on the ground. The rest of the winter it's just cold, dark, and brown with all the plants dead or dormant.
It baffles me that people bother to own snowmobiles or fat bikes here, unless you travel with them they are basically useless. Especially snowmobiles.

Stages dropped their entry-level price to $299 for left sided only. It really depends on your budget and your goals.

I had decided I would get the Powertap G3 (as I only have one bike and no plans to race or have more bikes). I read that it works well and has less issues than dual pedals.
The guy at the LBS talked me out of it and encouraged me to get a left side only one.
When it comes time to replace the drive train, I may look into this one: https://powermetercity.com/product/4...ided-crankset/
Not really cheap, but basically buying two single sided ones (and I can stick with the 105 theme).

Cost? I can get 1715 (+- -30 ) fo $ 500.00ish probably less. 60 mm deep carbon. Chinese, but they are excellent. Bike King on Ebay. Mine were 550 with xdr hub and swiss hubs. You'll be 400.00 or so for a Neuvation 11 speed hub.

Having looked at estimated power for a long time and then getting a power meter I was surprised to see that it was actually not too far off when looking at just the average power numbers. It tended to underestimate average power, but was still better than nothing. Like Datlas said, it is basically junk if you are using it to gauge actual performance or to see if you hit target power for intervals, etc. as it doesn't take wind or other things into account and the power spikes are usually way off and way too high.
Funny enough I was most excited to see a real approximation of calories with a PM than without. And then after noticing Strava power estimates being close-ish I wonder why they don't calculate calories from that? It would be a heck of a lot closer than the standard calorie estimate they give. For instance, I did a Christmas day ride where it said average power of 154. With a PM on the same route I've actually been right around there, maybe 160 or so. The watts to calories calculation gives me about 880 calories, but the Strava app says 1,548 calories. That's nearly double. It's ridiculous.
So long story short: probably a better estimate of calories if you're counting, but not at all any real use for actual training metrics.
I actually saw this video the other day as well:
