What is the Sturgis of Cycling?

Seriously though... (We went to Sturgis for our honeymoon)
A buddy told me I wouldn't like it. That it'd changed. Well, I'd come from a group of people who held what was once known as Bubba's Honda Drop. A party that started with a crane lifting a Wing above a pile of junked UJMs with gas poured over it. After a countdown, the crane let loose and the whole thing was set ablaze.
It's difficult to explain, but the best I can say it is defined in the difference between a sense of community (above) versus Sturgis, which left me with the impression of a hive mentality. Of drones.
There seems to be something within the bicyclist culture which allows for individualism in the RAGBRAI styled get togethers. I can appreciate that.
