I can't imagine wanting another bike. What would I do with it? Throw it on top the the huge pile of my other mostly unused bikes? I'd rather cackle hysterically and burn hundred dollar bills in the public square for general amusement of those around me.

You, on the other hand, should definitely get that additional frame.

$100 bill is the new twenty. I say go big or go home. At my age, I find myself just getting what I want, when I want. If you like it and you want it, then step up and get it, because there's about twenty people behind you with the same wants/needs/desires who haven't seen it yet.

the number of things here that make me think "Oh, i wish i hadn't bothered paying so much for that"

... is *heavily* outnumbered by the many recollections of

"Crap, remember that thing that got away from me because i hemmed and hawed over the price?"

so i say just do it.

Righto!

Lobster at the supermarket was $4.99 a pound this week. A price like that does not come around very often, so I bought four of them for my wife and I. I had them all steamed and ready for when she came home that night. We sat there and devoured them, gloating and chuckling to ourselves as if we had found an abandoned bag of cash. The total price for those lobster was $21.04, and they were fabulous! Since then, we talked about how - without much effort - we could have spent $21.00 at McD's. So yeah, I've also spent more cash on foolish trivial unmeaning things. Probably the greatest skill anyone could have is realizing what is worth spending your money on vs what is not.

Its simple. Would you lay in bed thinking about the new bike in the shop or lay awake thinking about how much money is in your wallet?

If it was something that:
  • Infrequently comes onto the market;
  • Is in my size;
  • Is not stupidly expensive;
  • I can pick it up or can be shipped to me at a reasonable rate;
  • Is in decent condition; and
  • Is something I want and have been searching for...
Then the answer is YES!

Now, if anyone has a lead on a small (51cm / 20 inches or so) Falcon frame in Reynolds 501 or 531 and/or a Concorde Colombo in PDM colours and made from Aelle R tubing, please, please let me know.

Funny you should ask; I moved this one out the door today. Really nice bike, but I can't honestly say I'm going to miss it.

I got a good number of responses on it, so I may sell a couple more while the gettin' is good. I wouldn't mind having an excuse to buy something special, and few more sales would give me at least a little justification for that

There's an interesting bit in Jiro Dreams of Sushi (film) where one of Jiro's suppliers, the fish guy, is talking about his approach to each morning at the tuna market.

He says
"Each day, there is one fish that is the best fish."
[short pause]
"I buy that fish."

Agree about the $100 = new twenty.

although I do OK now, I went through a ton of lean years to get here. It's hard to break the "save for a rainy day" mindset.

I'm finally to the point where I don't worry (much) about spending $200 a couple of time a year on a hobby.

OP now has absolutely no excuse and should probably cower from fear of the inevitable contempt and disdain by his otherwise loving peers if he doesn't pony up the $250-$300 for a bike frame he doesn't actually need. There is no turning back. Not even the seller can help him now. His fate has been written.

On boy and how, Sold most most of the midlever and out of size. Time for the mtbs to be pedaled. With those sales the space is free to perhaps pick a Motobecane from the neighbors stash of bikes.

I just bought a $300 frame that I definitely, 100% didn't need and didn't even know I wanted. On top of that, it's a crap-shoot. It could be something special, or it could be junk. I'll eventually post about it...

Definitely a crap shoot. Right after one of my frames cracked, I paid an ebay seller over $300 for an almost too small 531c frameset that I absolutely thought I needed ... at the time. <eyeroll> A few months later, I found a beautifully built chromoly Miyata for only $150 that certainly rivals 531c. A year later, I found a well built-up Columbus Bertoni for about the same price as that earlier frameset.

Timing is everything, but ...
