1984 Miele Nuova Corsa
I bought this at a pre-reno sale. Looked good. Then I got home and the seatpost was stuck. I soaked in WD40, took the clamp off, put it in the sewer grate out front and twisted. After lots and lots of effort there was a loud snap and it turned a tiny fraction of a degree. Over the coming days more twisting and WD40 and pinning an old saddle between some stairs and finally it came out. Drugs have nothing on the rush that is removing a stuck seatpost.
The rear campy nr had a bent cage but as luck would have it I had a good cage from a nr with a bent body. I was able to make 1 good derailleur out of 2 bad ones.
Here are the as found photos. Campagnolo Nuovo Record shifters and derailleurs. Miche crankset and pedals, unknown headset that takes 1/8" balls, and some ofmega hubs (I think) laced to ambrosio elite rims with a Shimano 600 freewheel. Modolo speedy calipers and levers. I have Kool Stop inserts coming for the brakes and new hoods for the levers. Overpaid for them but I couldn't help myself.
I am a bit further along in the resurrection than these photos but everything in good time.

Thanks for sharing the story. Nice looking bike. Look forward to seeing the after pictures. How are you going to address the brake lever hoods?

I'll get some touch up paint for the levers and fill in the letters again and blacken some of the scratches on the blades.

I'd be inclined to place this slightly later, circa 1985-1986. I assume the 1984 estimate is coming from the patent date on the rear derailleur?

I just "gifted" a velo sport prestige frame and fork to a friend because the adjustable cup wouldnt come out. I had 8 feet of leverage onto it, heat, wd40, sheldon's tool, trying to cut it out...little bugger bent several of my tools and is still in there. I think my friend will try to weld a big nut on there and use an impact gun. I think that is the answer but I have neither of those tools.

Yes, PAT 84. I found a serial number, either 6011 or 60111. The 3rd "1" is more of a divot and less shaped than the previous two.

Not directly relevant to the renovation but I thought Narhay would like to know I spotted 2 beautifully restored Miele road bikes out for a jaunt yesterday in Guelph.....was late for an appointment or I would have tried to chat them up.

Great story, nice bike. Love that you cobbled together the RD, and that you defeated the seatpost.

I did a bit more today. The pedals weren't good and needed rebuilding. Despite the close appearance to campy pedals on the outside the inside of the Miche quill pedals was decidedly less refined. They also used a tar-like grease that just didn't want to come out.
One of the modolo speedy caliper arms is not black like the others. It is dark bronze, barely noticeable. Wonder if it was a factory mistake or a replacement.

Wheels are done. I went with Schwalbe Lugano 700x25 tires. The rear cones were very bad but the races were good so I replaced the axle and cones. Sunrace 7 speed freewheel. Dished, trued, bearings replaced and cleaned out. They were very dry and caked inside.
The front cones take 7/32 bearings so I wasnt able to change them out. They are ok but not perfect.
Oddly enough I cant seem to find the rear quick release. It is somewhere around here. The brake hoods and pads have arrived so this bike can be finished depending on my schedule and motivation. Soon...

After some recent horrific multi hour experiences removing old bar tape I cannot express how content I am that this bar unwrapped itself within a few minutes. The last bit is to cable, chain and assemble.

Managed to get to the old sintered pads out and replaced them with new kool stops. Couldnt let the holders go to waste like that.

Oh, and the stem clamp bolt was stripped and fell out after I had polished it up so theres that. I need to replace the stem but the only spare one I have is sitting in between two arabesque 600 levers that are too narrow to fit a socket to the clamp nut to loosen. She is giving me one last fight before coming together.

Based on the serial number, I'd be tempted to say this is a 1986 model, despite the patent date on the rear derailleur.

Nice find and great progress so far. I noticed a number of Miele bikes for sale this summer and I really wanted to pick one up but when they were in my price range they got snapped up quick or were over priced. I'm hoping your seat post story will give me inspiration to get out the one I have in a Norco Monterey sitting in my garage. Unfortunately the guy I got it from decided to cut the post right down so I don't have much to work with.

The treads were never particularly beautiful...another one of the previous owner's stylistic choices. I got around to pouring a simple new set yesterday. They dont work as well for seatpost removal but it'll do.
