Thanks, that yellow really goes well with the black and ties in with the Schwinn decal.
Disclaimer: while admiring the job later, I noticed the right shift cable had been mistakenly trapped by the brake straddle cable. Quick fix, no one will be the wiser...
How is your High plains rolling these days. Any re builds, upgrades?

She's rolling along problem free as usual! No new pics though..... (i've been a lazy photog lately).
Let's see..... I replaced the original Biopace "granny gear" 28T with a 24T (steel) and what a huge difference that made. Also, I've put on a Minoura MT-4000SF front rack a few months back and that's been absolutely brilliant.
I'm going be putting on a new bar shortly but that will require a new stem. I'm also looking into a new set of wheels/hubs though that's on the huge spendy end so will likely wait.
What other mods did you do w/yours? (don't recall reading anything as i try to catch everything "High Plains" related i can!!!)

Big change on my 90 HP was the bar and stem. At first had the original stem and a generic ergo bar rode that for awhile but wanted to get closer to a true road set up so switched it out to SR 80 stem and a rando bar. Replaced the simple Schwinn headset for a Passage Tange unit. Brakes got new straddle wire cages as well.
Had to change the 80 for the 100 on it now and the fit is much better. The minihaha was stolen so got a Cannondale bag to replace it. Also went for a B17 to sit on. Shifting is now done with Exage 300LX but thinking Suntour ARX long cage would be an upgrade soon. Wheels need to be better so that will happen as well. Already switched the tires to WTB slicks 1.5, very lightweight.
This is the 21" frame, great size for me. This bike was a serious contender for the old faithful thread. Even though it didn't get first place I will never sell it. Such a smooth riding drop bar conversion.
Thanks for asking about my travel buddy !

I'm generally pleased with most stock things, though like you i agree some upgrades are needed! I believe mine has a Terry "Liberator" seat as well as the other upgrades.
Enjoy your oldie-but-goodie faithful!

Yeah, the 830 is just too small. It's torn down again. With that, and the Trek 620 orphan group, the MB-2 rides again. This seems like a good fit actually, but the bars could be higher. I guess I need another 180mm quill stem. Origin 8 in silver of course. It needs some color somehow, but I am glad it's not the red and moss green paint scheme. I will find something.,,,,BD

Different saddle, different tires. A lot better to ride now.

So excited, I can finally post in this thread! It's been a huge inspiration - this is my first build ever:
1990 Schwinn Mirada was the base, set up as a budget-ish tourer for my girlfriend. Disclaimer: saddle clamp slipped immediately before I took this pic, hence the wacky angle

Welcome to BF! I bet the GF is pleased. Do you have one to ride along with her? Good job and great choice for your first conversion, love the early 90 Schwinns too.

Did you respray the frame, or did you just find it in good condition? Mine's getting rather beat up.. On the one hand, I'm tempted to make it look nicer. On the other, I feel like the shabby look is a useful theft deterrent in the big city

Thanks 3speedslow! I'm working on finding an appropriate frame to convert myself now, I love how this Schwinn rides and got the bug now
Resprayed it! It polished up much, much better than I expected it to when I bought it, it was definitely someone's beater bike previous to this. I've got my eye on an old 85 Peugeot Orient Express now, and I might leave the original finish on it just so it looks a little less "stealable", hahaha.
Nice build! I continue to enjoy my Mirada a lot - it sees daily commute abuse and has been on a lot of long tours on and off road.

Vain, But Lacking Talent
Ok, wow. So I had this bike sort of ready back in December, but got busy and the kiddo #2 was born early February, so nothing happened.
Anyhow, I got this one rolling:
The rear wheel is basically shot (rim way out of true, beyond repair) and the tires are junk. Even so, a quick ride around the neighborhood and a little off-roading proved it to be a decent package. I left the cables pretty long assuming I would want more dirt specific drop bars and a higher stem, but it actually felt pretty good, even off road. I still might change it, but not right away. I might put more miles on this setup first.
I'm going to sort through my tire/wheel options. I have a friend who wanted me to take two used MTB's and build him one good commuter, so I could probably pull a set of wheels out of that batch. I'll talk to him later this week.
Long term plan includes fenders and dynamo lights. I have the lights and hub from another build that no longer exists, so I would just need to build up a wheel on that hub. But at this rate, I'd be surprised if I finished it by winter.

Whoa, @kevins08, nice job on that one! I like the two-tone green, rough 'n ready vibe on this one. Sort of a poor man's Elephant NFE vibe, and you're running big rubber!
And @WalksOn2Wheels, I love those old fade job Hard Rocks. Hey, I think it's a victory to finish a build in one year! I've got some headed into year 2 and 3. And I haven't had kids in the interim! Congratulations on that too, by the way!
I've said it before, I love this thread and the bikes posted here.

Suntour Command. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
On the plus side, it really is a unique build that always confuses the hell out of people.
I really do need to either change the whole drive train to Suntour, or move on to kelly take offs. Probably the latter given the pain in the butt of finding the hub/cassette.

Technically, it was a hybrid, and technically, they're trekking bars and not drops, but hopefully, this qualifies.
Before: 1988 Peugeot St. Laurent. Catalog link to a similar bike here. When I got it, it had the swept-back bars below:
I liked the length of the top tube (I have a really long torso), the height was about as big as my little legs would go, and it was actually made of good steel, so I started a project to make it my Oregon rain bike. I decided it would be metallic green and named "The Space Orc." Because why not?
After powdercoating (Olympic Powdercoating in Santa Ana did an amazing job -- and it was cheap!), I added some Deore-hubbed Rhyno Lites (had to stretch the spacing about 2mm from the old 130mm 6-speed wheels), some Panaracer Fairweather 1.75" tires, Velo Orange trekking bars, a Deore triple, some old MKS pedals I had in the house, a B17, and a custom headbadge with, of course, an orc.

Killer transformation! We're did you get that evil headbadge ? Man, spray some fake blood around the bike in high crime areas and scare the thieves away!
Very nice job and selection of parts. Too nice for what it is intended for but we all do that.

I'm a big fan of trekking bars myself but do you really like them turned upside down? I tried it and didn't like it, and I'm wondering if you've tried them both ways.
